Pre-Bacholertte Party
BARCELONA TO ALICANTE

Day 4….We managed to make our 10:30 am train, without the assistance of an alarm clock. (Cell phones won’t work here, so there goes that option) Doesn’t sound like a big deal to get to the station by 10- unless you have an understanding of the previous night.

We spent Day 3 enjoying the first bit of nice weather we have had since arriving. Some sun, almost no rain, and fairly warm for the better part of the day. We decided to take the tour bus around the route we had taken the previous day- with the rain and cold, we had missed most of the photo opportunities at the most desirable sights.

We got off the bus and spent some time at the 1992 Olympic site, which sits up on a hill overlooking the city. Right below the site, a short walk down the hill, is a beautiful palace that houses an art museum. We spent some time there, sitting on the front steps which provided an amazing overlook to the city. While there, we had the pleasure of listening to a gentleman playing guitar-beautifully. It was difficult to pull ourselves away from

the sun, view, and music….

Mid-day was back to our favorite local Tapas bar- AMAZING food! There were some new additions to the items offered previously-all very enjoyable. We remembered to take some photos, so they should be posted at the end of the entry. The tapas bars are such a nice way to experiment with the local food and customs. After our first foray into one (see Day 1 for pathetic details) we felt like pros- so much fun to grab a glass of wine or sangria, and walk up and down the bar deciding which tapas to put on your plate to bring back to the stand up table you are stationed at.

Ignoring local custom, we passed up the chance for a siesta, and made our way back to the bus route. The last sight we all wanted to see was the Sagrada Familia. (This deserves its own entry and photos-see later). After touring the cathedral, we decided to head back. Unfortunately, we were on a bus route that took us on a wide loop around a portion of the city. Wouldn’t have been too bad, except it was getting a bit chilly

by that point. We moved to the enclosed lower level of the bus, which while warmer, did not allow for the same views.

We decided to get off the bus at Las Ramblas, which appears to be Barcelona’s version of Faneuil Hall….fun for a short while, but not all that it is cracked up to be. We made our way back to the only internet café we have been able to locate, and spent some time logging on for a few quick emails and to check the train schedules.

Eventually, we made our way back to our apartment, to get ready for dinner. Trying to stay with the local custom, we ventured out and had an awesome dinner around 10 pm. We were naïve in thinking that it would probably be easier to get a good nights’ sleep, as it was a Sunday night, after all. But, apparently today is a church holiday….not sure which one, but it obviously includes mandatory all-night drinking and singing in the streets. The area under our balconies seems to be an especially important spot to celebrate….Once the celebrants finally decided to go home, it was time for the trash trucks (which

for some reason sounded like construction equipment) to take their time doing their thing through the area. Somewhere in between all the noise, the group of British girls staying above us (all 30 or 40….not really, just made enough noise for that many) returned from their all night bachelorette party. And to think we were invited, and missed ALL that fun. We did take a photo of the bride-to-be and maid of honor, while they were still somewhat sober (obviously prior to going out, as there was not a single one who fit that description upon their rather raucous return) More later….
