Sorry for the long delay with keeping up with the blog. The combination of limited Internet and long days are our excuse. We landed in Barcelona at about 10 AM and decided to take a taxi rather than a bus to our hotel. The bus would have been about 6 euro per person but all in all, even though the taxi meter showed 28 when we arrived at our destination, it wound up being a 46 euro trip. We checked into our hotel which was like an apartment. We had 2 bedrooms, a full kitchen, a washing machine, a nice living room and great air conditioning! If ever in Barcelona, I can recommend the Casp 74 Apartments as a great place to stay both for the accommodations and the location. After getting settled in, we decided ... read more

The main places for visiting today required advanced ticket purchase with nominated admission times due to the numbers of visitors each site attracts. So first bus to Parc Tibidabo to catch the funicular to the top of the mountain with views across all of Barcelona region. There's an amusement park with carnival type rides for those interested and the obligatory basilica for this city of churches. We then joined the throng becoming engrossed by the spectacle that is the Sagrada Familia with it's towering steeples, ornate decoration and just the amazing amount of detail that has gone into the design and construction of this massive project. We last saw this in 1983 so 34 years of construction has pushed it along significantly with completion now scheduled for 2026. One wonders where all of the stonemasons will ... read more

Day 2 in Spain starts with a nice sleep and breakfast. We have a guided photo tour today during which we are to see various important buildings in the City. Its 38 degrees and raining which is both a blessing and curse. The blessing is that it greatly thins out the crowds around important buildings and provides flat light good for really good photo opportunities, the curse is its "f"ing cold and wet! The tour consists of just Kris and I along with our guide. She quite knowledgeable about camera settings, angles, exposure speed, F-settings, etc, and knows the unusual locations where little known but important treasures are located. The biggest issue is Kris looks and walks like the giant stay puff marshmallow in Ghostbusters! She has several layers on, plus wears her clutch and camera ... read more

Yippie! We arrive in Spain! The flight from Portland to Amsterdam was 9 hours 45 minuets, while that seems long, making regular trips to Hawaii (6hours) put me in shape for this kind of trip. We were able to secure exit row seats with some sizable leg space. While this may be better than regular coach it's not close to first class, and it is by no means close to coach on Emerits. The thing about this extra space is that when the flight attendant gets up to preform their duties the seat folds up providing a full 6 feet of extra space, this is where the bathroom junkies like to congregate. Thats a whole story in itself, I am truly amazed at the bathroom attendee repertoire of exercises they feel compiled to preform during their ... read more

After another evening sampling the tapas in Fondo, we decided over pig’s ears to devote our final day in Barcelona to Gaudi. The Other Half decided against sampling the afore mentioned and saved her appetite for the grilled prawns and fideua – the latter is a form of paella with noodle base. We devoted our final day in Barcelona to Gaudi. Antoni Gaudi’s most famous creation in the city is the Basilica & Expiatory Church of the Holy Family – otherwise known as the Sagrada Familia. Along with the thousands, we had been to see the progress on this project earlier in the trip. The unfinished is still coming along, although exactly what the final finish date will be is open to debate. Gaudi of course is long since departed, after his unfortunate incident with a ... read more

The temporary “resident” of our local Caixa Bank was sound asleep in the cash machine hall, as we headed out Sunday morning. The ingenious member of the disadvantaged in Barcelona had found a solution to his temporary housing problems. He had moved in at some point after close of business on Friday and taken up residence in the warm. The customers seemed not to mind and were still engaged in their normal cash transactions, whilst our man slept his way through the weekend. The remainder of the neighbourhood was also fast asleep with the exception of the dog walking fraternity. We made our way towards the Stadium Narcis Sala, home of Union Esportes Sant Andreu. The ultras were gathering – as per their instructions on Twitter – for the march to their local derby with Club ... read more

It was a pleasant, sunny mid-November Friday afternoon. The location - a back street bar in the Barcelonetta area behind the beach. 12 Euros. A 20 Euro note was handed over. Are you sure we heard correctly? The change duly arrived. There was no mistake - 8 Euros returned. 2 large, 1 small Estrella Dam. The price of Brexit and a collapsing £. After the Man in the Middle's chin had been retrieved from the floor, we had a philosophical discussion about the price of continental lagers in the John Borlaise Warren and an air of reality returned. We went on our merry way, although there would be no glory to find on a weekend when the international football calendar shut down the local big leagues. There would be little chance of seeing a resident of ... read more

I’ve officially been abroad for 3 months (well, almost 4 months now) and I have settled into London life well. Well, as well as can be expected – I’ve been challenged at times but have enjoyed almost every moment of moving to and settling in a different country to the one I’ve called home all my life. Especially as I’d written this off as being a doable thing years ago, particularly in the past couple of years so to be over here, finally achieving those dreams, feels amazing despite any tough moments that may arise. So, naturally, to mark this momentous occasion I went on my first proper holiday and ventured outside of the UK. Since I’d gotten myself organised and settled and set up in a short amount of time, I treated myself to Barcelona, ... read more

- 26th July - 28th July 2016 Let me tell you about the enchanting, culture-bound city of Barcelona.. The capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, in the remarkable country of Espana where the people are lively, tanned and beautiful. For those culture vultures out there, Barcelona is overflowing with diversity, in all forms - people, activities, food, drinks, entertainment, historic sites – it will keep you happy and on your feet for weeks. It is the place to go to be immersed with other upbeat and positive people; the enthusiastic vibe is present and flowing around you no matter where you are. I knew I loved Barcelona straight away when we got off the bus from the airport. The wide streets are lined with tall palm trees, and there are fountains and sculptures in the ... read more

Full day in Barcelona. First we went on a tour around town and the first stop was the Sagrada Familiar, a basilica started in the late 1800s by an architect by the name of Antonio Gaudi. This guy had amazing vision for the time. The outside is certainly a feat of engineering and the inside is out of this world. We booked tickets online (this is the only way to get in as the queues are hideous) They hope to have it finished by the year 2026. But Spanish time can be very elastic. There are 200 people working on it and the early part was funded only by donations and now by visitor entry. They call the architecture - Organic Architecture as Gaudi had a very different style and liked to incorporate ceramics and unusual ... read more
