El pico San Millán es el monte más alto y más emblemático de la sierra de la Demanda burgalesa. Su cara sur desciende suavemente 1.000 metros hasta el pueblo de Pineda de la Sierra, en el valle del río Arlanzón, el mismo río que atraviesa la ciudad de Burgos.
Su cara norte, es mucho más agreste, dominando el valle del río Urbión, y asomándose al del río Tirón, cuyas aguas bajan al caudaloso río Ebro.

Monté la bicicleta en el autobús de Zaragoza, y antes de las 9:30 llega a Belorado.
Tras tomar un café con leche y hacer algunas compras pedaleé hasta Santa Cruz del Valle Urbión pasando por Pradoluengo.
Santa Cruz del valle Urbión es un pueblo pequeño dividido en dos barrios, y con las casas típicas de entramado de madera y en uno de los valles más bonitos de la sierra.
A unos tres kilómetros arriba en el valle, se encuentra Zarzia, un area recreativa estupenda con barbacoas, fuente, y refugio. Desde aquí aparecen marcadas varias rutas para hacer a pie, y aquí aparqué la bicicleta.

La ruta clásica para subir a la cima del San Millán es remontar el río Urbión hasta su nacimiento y la laguna para subir después el circo glacial. Al haber todavía algo de hielo y nieve opté por otra ruta, que aunque más larga, era más sencilla.
Estos valles que suben al san Millán guardan algunos de los hayedos más espectaculares de la sierra de la Demanda. Uno de ellos es el del barranco de Abanza, por el que se rodea para subir a unas majadas. Aún no estaba en su esplendor, pues las hayas sólamente comenzaban a brotar y el bosque quedaba desnudo. Los brezos sin embargo, antes de entrar en el hayedo, estaban preciosos llenos de florecillas rosadas.
El día fue bueno y despejado, así que las vistas estupendas. Mirando al norte se ve el resto de la Sierra de la Demanda, desde el Trigaza, que casi es monte gemelo del San Millán, hasta el San Lorenzo, el monte más alto de esta sierra, con casi 2.300 metros de altura y ya en la parte riojana. Mirando hacia hacia el sur se ven otras de las primeras sierras del Sistema Ibérico: la sierra del Mencilla (que es estribación de la Demanda), la sierra de Neila y los Picos de Urbión. La cara sur del San Millán, al contrario que la cara norte con su circo, no conservaba nada de nieve.

Para el descenso, tomé el mismo camino. Pero en vez de volver a Belorado para tomar el autobús de vuelta para casa, fui dirección este hasta el pueblo de Alarcia. Allí me salió al encuentro Juan Luis, mi amigo de Pineda de la Sierra, que me montó la bicicleta en el coche y nos fuimos a tomar unas cervezas. Como él conducía las tomaba sin alcohol, pero otro amigo con el que íbamos, llegó de vuelta a Pineda bastante perfumado.
Algo perfumado me fui yo también a la cama tras cenar huevos fritos con jamón y unos vasos de vino tinto.

San Millán peak is the highest mount and the most emblematic one on the Burgos side of the Demanda range. Its south face rolls down 1.000 meters to the village of Pineda de la Sierra and valley of Arlanzón river, the same river that goes through the city of Burgos.
The north face, rougher, overviews the valley of Urbión river and leans out over Tirón river valley, running down to mighty river Ebro.

I took my bicycle on the Zaragoza bus, and before 9:30 it arrived in Belorado. After having a coffe and buying what needed for the day, I cycled to the village of Santa Cruz del Valle Urbión through Pradoluengo.
Santa Cruz del valle Urbión is a little village divided into two neighborhoods with the typical houses of the area in timber framework in one of the most beautiful valleys of the Demanda range.
Around 3 kilometers up in the valley, you find Zarzia, a very nice picnic area with some barbecues, one fountain and one shelter. From this area there are several hiking trails marked, so it was the perfect place to park the bike.

The classic hike to go up to San Millán summit is along river Urbión up to its source and the lagoon, and then climbing the glaciar cirque. As there was still some snow and ice, I took another way, longer but easier.
These valleys that ascend to San Millán preserve some of the best beech forests in Demanda. One of these is the Abanza ravine, on the way round to some shepherd folds. Still it hadn´t achieved its greatest splendor, for the beech leaves were just starting to appear and the forest was greenless. However, the heathers, before the beech forest, were packed with pink little flowers.
The day was good and cloudless, so the views were also very nice. Looking to the north there is the rest of Sierra de la Demanda, from Trigaza mount, (almost a twin one to San Millán), east to the San Lorenzo mount, the highest in the range with almost 2.300 meter of altitude on the side of the region of La Rioja. Looking to the south there are the other first ranges of the Iberian system: Mencilla range (a spur of the Demanda actually), Neila range and the Urbión peaks. The San Millán south face, unlike the north face with its cirque, had no snow at all.

For going down, I took the same way. Once down, instead of cicling to Belorado to take the bus back home, I went westwards as far as the little village of Alarcia. There, my friend Juan Luis was waiting for me. We put the bicycle inside his car trunk and went for a couple of beers. As he was driving he had them with no alcohol, but another friend was going with him arrived home, in Pineda de la Sierra quite tipsy.
Also a little tipsy I went to bed after dinner a couple of fried eggs, ham and some glasses of wine.
