San Sebastian
We arrived in the beautiful San Seb, rumoured by many to be heaven on earth, in the rain and the cold. It was a little dis heartening when you arrive at your tropical beach destination and it it cold and miserable. But we walked to our hostel, checked in with my new friends and roomates, Rachael, and the hilarious couple from Newcastle Courtney and Nathan. Our friend Jo was in the room next door on her own. We unpacked and then got ready for pur Pinchos crawl that Haley our busabout guide organised for us. I was evennmore excited at the prospect of catching up with the beautiful Beckie, who I had last seen in Vienna. We had a beauiful greeting on the stairs of the hostel where she looked up and I looked down and romance was truely born. haha Or at least we had huge hugs and headed to a local wine bar tapas bar to catch up on the goss. Beckie had kept extending her stay in San Seb as it was such an amazing city with incredible food and an amazing beach so I was so glad she would still be there when I
arrived. She had learnt some of the local dialect (please = esk-eric-asko) and impressed the local bar staff so well they knew her as their special kangaroo. We were treated like royalty and the food and wine was delectable.
Beckie then came with us on our pinchos crawl to taste the delicious beef cheek delicacy, roasted camembert, froigraw (duck liver), croquettes and of course, sangria. As Becki and I had already had a wine we were rearing to go, more wine, more sangria lead to more dancing, and more dancing, a couple of clubs later, some crazy photos and an occasional samba demonstration from myself, crazy dancing with random French and Spanish men in another club led to me being very tired so I headed home early (4 am). But wait, this is not the end of the story... And unfortunately I need to digress to give you the whole story.
Earlier that day.....
Haley, our busabout guide, had decided we had so few people on our bus we should play speed meeting (same as speed dating but no dating needed). We had ended up discussing random travel fears and through sharing of various stories realised that Jo
had had a number of weird experierences and seemed to draw trouble towards her on a number of occasions. She was then on her own in the hostel dorm next to us with what she referred to as her "weird" roomate.
So at 5am when Courtney, Nathan, Rachael and Jo decided to return home for bed, and Jo realised she would have to sleep next to the aforesaid "weird" roomate, things took a turn towards interesting. Of course we aren't sure what made this guy weird but none the less at 5am, reason had departed for the evening to get a good nights sleep and drunken revalry presides overall. So they decided to take Jo's mattress out of her room and put it on the floor of our room. Mind you, when I woke grogily, it was the two girls who were expertly moving the mattress and the rest in histerics loudly telling everyone to "be quiet" in tones that could have woken the dead. I think I also got a pat on the head gently saying "its ok, just go back to sleep, shhhh, its ok, sleep now". I was too tired to argue so now we had
2 bunk beds and an extra mattress on the floor between us like a slumber party...and there was no room left to get out. Haha
Of course the next morning I woke to say "Umm, why is Jo here?". which began a new round of histerics and also possibly awoke a number of hangovers. Even funnier was the strange Spanish that came from the cleaners next door trying to figure out why suddenly the mattress had gone missing! We kept to our rooms for most of the morning before discovering there were only cold showers unless we walked down 3 flights of stairs. Cold water does wonders for a sore head, but even better is some lunch and a swim at the beach.
In the afternoon Jo and I decided to do some sight seeing around town, check out the local church, get some more food and walk around the beautiful bay to see the view of the next town. The sunset was stunning and so was the shopping. I bought a very cute skirt that had pockets! We then headed back to our favourite pinchos bar for the exact same meal we had eaten the previous evening, as it had been so delicious. We headed to the bay for a final look before deciding we would discover it again the following morning with an early walk. We also checked out the local gardens which had nesting swans.
Back in thr hostel I was feeling decidedly unwell and had the horrible inkling I was getting stomache cramps not unlike the ones I had in Vietnam when I had gotten food poisoning. Thus began a dreadful night of no sleep, pain and frequent trips to drive the big white porcelain bus. :-(
No sight seeing in the morning, luckily Rachael had pills to help me from dying further which I gratefully accepted and I took the lazy option of a taxi to the airport as I wasn't sure I could make it on a bus. Luckily my first flight I had an entire row to myself to try and sleep off my feelings of death before a two our layover in Barcelona airport where I tried to contemplate my still rumbling stomachd to be quiet. I am still not sure what it was, Jo ate all the same food I did, but Rome's first meal would be very carefully chosen. I would still happily go back and spend a week in San Sebastian, I feel like I didn't get to see it properly and it was such a fun and happening place. Hopefully before I return to Aus, but definately one day! :-)
