Welcome to Spain!
We FINALLY made it to Tarifa! We took the ferry over from Tanger to Tarifa, Spain only to discover that we had missed the last bus from Tarifa to Jerez and the next bus the next morning would get us there too late to catch our flight. Matt, Egan, and Anna headed down to see if the rental car place was open while the rest of us transferred our ever growing luggage over to a cafe to sit. They came back without a rental car but with two taxis that had agreed to take us to Jerez for 120 Euros per vehicle, which worked out to 35 Euros a piece...much cheaper than having to rebook our flight!! Once we got into Jerez we were so happy to see our old friend, Hotel Ibis, and decided to stay there for the night.
After nice long hot showers (we still had sand from the beach the day before on us!) we went into Jerez for dinner. It was mine and Matt's first visit to Spain and it was gorgeous. We're actually planning on going back to Spain in about 3 weeks so we can see more of it. We had dinner and Egan ordered a bottle of red wine for all of us to split. We were shocked when the red wine turned out to be sherry! It's the first time I've ever tried sherry and probably the last. I've found out since we got back that Jerez is the sherry capital...it's actually where sherry originated from. Now that I know that I'm not so shocked that we got that instead of a regular red wine. We had some below average tapas and paella for dinner and walked around a little bit but it was after midnight on a Sunday night at this point and there wasn't much to see so we headed back to the hotel. The architecture and streets that we did explore were beautiful though and we definitely want to go back.
We learned a lot this trip...
Maps, travel books and train/bus schedules are good things to have with you when you travel, which none of us did this trip
The French that I learned in high school and the Spanish that Matt learned is REALLY rusty
Morocco is roughly the size of California, and traveling from southern Morocco to southern Spain is too much to do, comfortably, in 5 days
Always pack a long sleeved shirt or jacket, no matter how warm you think the weather is going to be
A roll of Charmin can last 7 people a long time when used sparingly
It's always good to bring Pepto and Immodium when you travel
Flashlights are good to have when the light in your train compartment doesn't work
Traveling in groups is a lot of fun!!
Overall, this was a great trip. Our rugs made it back safe and sound and are in our apartment now and we feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to see just this tiny portion of Africa.
