Coming to Nerja on the Costa del Sol was the perfect way to end this trip. The hotel, Paradores de Nerja, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on a cliff, was beautiful with an elevator down to the beach and lots of places to sit to enjoy the view and the sun. And yes, it was sunny for our 2 days here, with a high temperature getting into the low 60s. We arrived in time to sit outside and have a drink before it got dark. Dinner was at a pizza place that was open on Calle Carabeo, near the hotel. It was fun and cheap, but with mediocre pizza. The sun rises in Nerja at 8:27 am, with a glorious sunrise over the Mediteranean. The sky started turning colors at about 8. As you might guess, many pictures were taken. The hotel breakfast buffet was the best on the trip, which says a lot because the others were very good. The plan was to go to Malaga for the day to see the Picasso Museum. I couldn’t pull myself away from the beach and stayed behind. So did Terry. We walked on the sand, which is dark and coarse with small stones
and no shells, (New Jersey beaches beat that)! and on the boardwalk-like walkway along Burriana Beach, sat on the beach for awhile. We walked to town and to the Balcon de Europa, a promenade along the water with shops and restaurants. It turns out that even though it’s off season there are lots of people around and many places are open. We came back to the Paradores and spent the rest of the afternoon on a beach chair, with a mojito, in the sun...pretty awesome. Eventually we walked to the To El Chirinquito de Ayo, which Rick Steve’s said had great paella, on Terry's must try list. We watched them making it over a fire in an enormous wok like pan. Too bad they didn’t have a vegetarian variety, but salad, barbecued potatoes and sangria filled in for me. The rest of our group joined us here, along with John for a last dinner together. He’s a brave young man, but also very sweet as he talked a little about his family in Lisbon, even sharing a picture of his girlfriend, which, of course, brought lots of oohs and ahs from all these abuelas.
The day ended as perfectly
as it started…with a drive to a place where we could see the sunset just a few minutes down the road from out hotel. It was another magnificent spot on the water and there were dolphins, lots of them. What more could anyone ask for?
Organizing my things and packing began to bring me back to reality..that it was time to go back home. I feel lucky, blessed, to be able to travel and explore new places, and to do it with women that like to laugh, and eat, and drink, and take pictures, OK, and shop, but most importantly, experience new adventures . Big question…where to next???
