"Woo-hooo!!!!"
(Photo from Vicky's phone) Today was our day of adrenaline-filled activities! We started the day with some white-water rafting with
TOP rafting (conveniently where we were staying!).The three of us were joined by three lads, also travelling around on their holidays & we got two instructors as one was in training. After getting kitted out & being shown the basics on dry land we carried the boat down the stream by the TOP base and into the Soča river. I managed to bagsie one of the "tiger" spots at the front of the raft! After some practice in calm water and a bit of a swim in the river (to practice pulling mates back into the boat!) we tried our hands at the rapids (up to grade III)! With a couple of stops, once to paddle up a stream & secondly to pull the raft up on to a rock, turn it upside down & use it as a slide! After successfully navigating approximately 9km of the river we finished off with a swim before clambering out, carrying the boat up to the bus (well, the lads carried it, we were too short to really help much!). Sadly I don't have any photos of the rafting
Zipline fun!
(Photo from Chavaunne's phone) as despite them filming it & us being told we could obtain copies I have yet to have any replies to my request (made in person on the day & afterwards by email).
We returned to base and had a lazy lunch on the table by the stream then flooped in hammocks/chairs until it was time to be picked up for the afternoon zipline session! This was actually over the Učja canyon rather than the main Soča. This claims to be the biggest zipline in Europe with 10 lines of 250-600m long totalling 4km of zipline! The lines start at the top of the canyon at 200m & finish by zipping along just over the river reaching speeds of up to 60km/h! It was great fun with awesome views along & down into the valley - I was woo-hoo-ing along! The only tricky bit was we were responsible for our own breaking (using a gloved hand) & judging it so you came in to stop at exactly the right point was a bit of an art. After a few too fast & one premature stop(!) I managed to perfect it by the last few lines.
It was horrendously
Evening drinks
(Photo from Vicky's phone) hot though & a stop at a mountain hut for a drink from the spring was most welcome. We were also told the history of ziplines in this region - mountain meadows like the one we stopped in were too steep for carts to get good to or hay from so they were zipped in & out from across the valley. Some of the old lines remain in place but I wouldn't want to try to use them!
After being dropped off back at Top rooms we had another risotto (asparagus this time) down by the river before deciding to go for an evening stroll along the river stopping for drinks & dessert at the hotel/restaurant we'd passed the night before. We found a place where we could safely wade over a back channel out to a stone & stand spit/island. On returning to the restaurant there was bubbly for them that liked it & mojitos for me plus tiramisu (& chips to satisfy Vicky's cravings!). Vicky had wanted to party with the rafting guys but they'd all vanished by the time we got back.
