Well after 12 hours in a place no-one could claim to understand it, or it's people. I accidentally spent this much time in Serbia, then deliberately 24h in Montenegro. What I do want to say is that the Slavik states, in particular Serbia, have always been in dispute. fighting has never been far from these people (WW1 started here). Throughout history these states have been amalgamated and broken apart, often with serbia in control. Today they are almost completely separated - Montenegro voted and gained independance in May this year, and the Serbs are currently having a referendum as to whether Kosovo should be allowed to break off as well. I don't know how this'll work, I understand the majority of Kosovar people want to, but there are far more in Serbia. If the vote is ... read more

Belgrade is smoky... Its the last bastion of political incorrectness in a world of micro-anti-viral same-ness... I have a theory why they smoke though... Its very clever (thank you, thank you...) it's to prevent lead poisoning. Yes, thats right. You see the traffic is so damn congested and hazardessly toxic-fume enhanced, that by reducing their lung capacities with smoking it reduces their exposure to the traffic fumes. I could be wrong though, maybe its just they enjoy the double entendre of asking someone if they want to smoke? (do you remember the Hugh Grant incident???) Actually its not so bad, and Cairo smog was worse... but the traffic has increased in the last three years ... People are smiling more and I believe I've already mentioned its generally cleaner. You get the roadside rubbish dumping outside ... read more

Arrived yesterday after horror flight from Milan - only an hour but Alitalia pilot seemed to think being Italian made him a Fagio or something... He was turning circles (after take-off - did he forget which way to fly???) and tipping plane sideways from left to right and generally acting as if he was dodging birds migrating south... Belgrade has freshened up in the 3 years I've been gone. The airport is a little crisper (although some bright paint might make it a little more welcoming) and Passport Control have learnt please and thank you and to smile. Biggest change - no more interrogations..., in fact no one asked me why I was coming at all. But speaking a little Serbian might have been the reason. The young American lad behind me was given a bit ... read more

In Australia, streets in most towns and cities become deserted at night... The rest of the world comes out to party after the sun goes down and in Belgrade this happens with gusto and style! This town is pumping and never shuts down. Its also very walkable and there are cafes and bars every two steps... just in case you are hungry, thirsty or both. Enjoy the tour... Some memories too for my Boban... Please excuse some blurring - I had to use a very slow shutter to get the night shots...... read more

Arriving in Belgrade it was a lovely sunny Tuesday morning, and after our mission to get there we were feeling positive. We got ourselves a room, some cash and had a much needed shower and we were off. The main centre of town is a long, cobbled pedestrian area lined with shops and fountains and with cafes and bars spilling out underneath colourful umbrellas. There are beautiful people everywhere and in the morning it smells of coffee, fresh bread and perfume. At the end of the walk is a huge, tree covered park in the remains of an old fort. From the ramparts you can look across the city and to the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, its a great view. With the sun shining down and everyone out enjoying the summer its a ... read more

After deciding that we'd spent more time than was needed chilling by the "beach" in Montenegro, the group thought that it may be fun to check out Serbia. I don't think that anyone really knew what to expect from a place like Belgrade but whatever our expectations, they were certainly surpassed. Considering Belgrade got it's arse severely kicked in 1999 when NATO bombed the crap out of it for pissing off its neighboring countries, the city had a lot to offer. Arriving in the morning after a 12 hour overnight bus, we checked into our hostel. It was a converted penthouse apartment and definately one of the strangest setups I've seen in a hostel but a very good atmostphere. Deciding we were all hungry, we left to find whatever for Serbia had to offer in the ... read more

Well, not quite but at least I've arrived! I can't quite believe that I managed, so effortlessly, to while away ten hours at Frankfurt airport until my connecting flight to Belgrade but I think I passed with flying colours. Thanks in part to my wonderful new investment - my Thermarest - which saw me comfortably laid out for at least four hours catching up on some sleep (ear plugs in) in a not too hidden corner of Frankfurt airport. It came as no surprise that my flight to Belgrade was delayed but by this time I had time wasting down to a fine art... Arrival into Belgrade was relatively painless except for those passengers that wouldn't/couldn't wait until the plane had come to a standstill before trying to dislodge their hand luggage (which I'm sure was ... read more
