Exit 7-10 July 2011, Serbia Novi Sad It so happens that I mostly do not manage to write a complete story about a trip during or after it, and when it comes to the task I simply want to do away with it as quickly as possible. It is not that I do not like writing about trips. Let’s get, though, straight to the point. Exit Festival is, without any flattery, the best dance event I ever visited. There is little to relate since my 4 days were passed according to the same simple scheme: party – sleep – translate – eat – party etc. 7 July While staying in Beograde, I wanted to do some translation in the morning, but failed, slept until the checkout time. I walked to the bus station and bought a ... read more

Is it possible that Serbia have the hottest women in the world? Well no but they are pretty bloody close. Belgrade (no offense) lets them down. They do however have the most athletic legs in the world. Christ! I don’t know how they do it. I caught the train to the north of Serbia to Novi Sad where you can’t get anymore Serbian. From the 18th-19th century it had the highest population of ethnic Serbs. It was culturally and politically that way as at the time Serbia didn’t have a nation of their own. Nowadays it’s a high student population. I ended up staying at a home stay, which was right next to the cathedral on the main square. I immediately took a liking to the place, again a very strong cafe culture with an alternative ... read more

So not too much has happened since the last post. Biggest thing to happen was we went to Belgrade for a day of walking around and seeing the sites. I have to honestly say I like Novi Sad quite a bit more than Belgrade. It's just dirty, and too busy there for my liking. The sites are quite cool to see, but Novi Sad is a nicer city. Better views here in my opinion. We're also entering the last couple of days in lovely Serbia! It's sad to leave, but on the brighter side we're heading to Greece! We fly into Athens on the 6th. Our plans for the next couple of days? To party of course. Dusans birthday is on the 4th and we're planning on getting all of our new friends out to go ... read more

Well now we're back at home base here in Novi Sad. The ride back here however was quite a journey. We had to take some random ass "taxi" ride from a fella in Stara Moravica who drives people around for a second job. This guys car is looks like it's been dead and resuscitated 4 times. It's like a cat and has 9 lives! Anyways we all pile in this car to fill it to the brim, and we start of on our way to Topolo. Topolo is a city in between Srara Moravica and Novi Sad, it's where we're going to catch a bus to finish off the rest of the trip. Crazy taxi man manages to get us to Topolo in about 8.5 minutes when it should be about a 15 min drive. I ... read more

So We've been here in stara moravica no for about 5 days. Nothing too crazy has been happening. It's a pretty small town. We basically just garden and walk around lol. We'll probably be heading Back to Novi Sad in the next few days. One thing I would like to bring up is that some farmers still use horse and buggies here!!! How crazy is that!!! I attached a picture so you can see! Actually........We just go back from a little excursion to Subotica. Another town more North closer to Hungary. It was pretty awesome. Nice little sea wall out there, and some old buildings! A great day overall! Another Canuck game tonight? Go Canucks Go!... read more

Hey All, We decided to keep a travel blog of what's been going on through our adventures of gnarly trip through Europe. I'm pretty sure myself (Ryan) and Dusan will both be writing on this so there is a pretty easy way to figure out who is writing. Dusans will be perfect in punctuation and grammar, where mine will be a shit storm of spelling mistakes and commas. So lets start off at the beginning. We left Vancouver May. 7th accompanied by Dusans family, and until the boarding gates my family. There we hung out ate Subway and watched our Canucks play to a lead going into the 3rd period against Nashville (to which we later found out they had lost that game :^( ), but during the beginning of the third period we reluctantly turned ... read more

The flat, black landscape of Hungary blared at me in vibrant stillness as Jitka slept, and I stood next to the open window accompanied by Lawrence's RA podcast (one of my deep house faves whose company on my travels last summer inspired nenahýbejte se z oken), as our decaying rychlík glided around the neverending plains, with the lights of Budapest still glaring at me 100 kilometers distant, and the faraway streetlights from the parallel motorway just seeming to stay as still as the many visible stars, like a backdrop to a SNES game. Momentarily we seemed to be stopping as the sooty Rothko painting was marred by a house or factory, a level crossing, a buzzing network of sidings and having cleared these, we sped up again, hurtling towards the Serbian border at the usual speed ... read more

We entered the world of Cyrillic bus timetables in the bid to relocate to Novi Sad - capital of the autonomous region of Vojvodina. The timetables of course meant absolutely nothing and it was just a case of scrolling down until finding what Novi Sad looked like on the Cyrillic translation we had written down. In the end it was all quite straight forward, we were directed from one ticket booth to Number 13 (!!) where a degree of English smoothed the transaction. The transaction also came with an explanation of the token that you get with the bus ticket (575 dinars) - a token is required to get through the barriers on to the platforms at the main Belgrade bus station, so don’t lose it. The same token system didn’t operate on the return from ... read more

Novi Sad 2-3 (June 29-30) I met the rest of the group on the work to the train station. Our train trip was a warm but comfortable enough one on the way to Novi Sad, Serbia. The border crossing was pretty painless and we were soon there. We had lovely rooms in Novi Sad. The town had a very alive feeling and lots of cafes. Our orientation work took us past the local market and over the Danube to the local fortress. The interesting feature on the clock tower was that the hands were opposite to what you expected the long indication the hour and the short the minutes. Something to do with making it easier for boats on the river to tell the time. It was also interesting to learn that anyone with a view ... read more
