21 October 2014 San Marino is one of the world’s oldest republics being founded in 1243 and the only surviving Italian city state. It has two heads of state called Captains Regent and each holds office for six months each year. The old town, dominated by three castles is built along the ridge of Mount Titano giving extensive views in all directions.
We caught the bus from the campsite to the old town and spent a pleasant morning wandering along its narrow streets and walking along the ridge between the castles. After lunch we continued our journey northward for 220 k to Venice where we plan to spend the next couple of days.
