We haven’t managed to visit a country so far on this trip that neither of us have been to before, but hopefully that all changes today. I’ve booked a bus ride to the mighty Republic of San Marino which is an hour south-west of Rimini. It’s also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, so hopefully it should be a day free of violence. I read that San Marino’s only 61 square kilometres in area, which makes it the world’s fifth smallest country after the Vatican City, Monaco, Nauru and Tuvalu. One of its other main claims to fame is that it’s generally regarded as the world’s oldest still existing republic. Its origins date all the way back to 301 AD to a Dalmatian stonecutter by name of San Marino. He set up a ... read more

Dear All Saluti di nuovo! This is my second and final entry on my mini-trip in February, and will relate my time in gorgeous little San Marino, sandwiched in between my time in Rimini and Bologna. And my goodness, what an amazing place this little country is! It is the fifth smallest country in the world, and the third smallest in Europe after the Vatican and Monaco. Still, it's a bit bigger than those two, at 24 square miles, though still has a population density of 1465 people per square mile, pretty much exactly twice as much as the UK, with a population of around 34,000 in total. It is a fascinating country with a very interesting history, and really is breathtakingly beautiful. Unlike Monaco and Liechtenstein, it doesn't have a monarchy and never has done ... read more

There are countries and there are countries. Some countries encompass an entire continent, some just a hill. San Marino belongs to the second sort. Its claim to fame is that its the oldest republic in Europe, or actually the world. It's located on a hill. All of it! But it consists of more then just San Marino City, which isn't really a city by any account. There are a few municipalities scattered around the base of the hill that also belong to this little nation. But most people just see the town on the hill, the name-sake of the country. Jenni and I were no different. We stayed in a lovely hotel at the top, with wonderful views over surrounding Italy. The old town is quite beautiful, with three forts straddling the ridge of the hill, ... read more

San Marino is only one of three countries in the world surrounded entirely by another country; the others being the Vatican City and Lesotho. At 64 square miles, it is the third smallest country in Europe behind Vatican (again!!) and Monaco however, it does hold the record of being the oldest republic in the world. To cap this off they are 209thin the FIFA soccer world standings just below the British Virgin Islands and above Anguilla!! Bearing in mind there are only 210 nations listed in the FIFA rankings, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that the only way is up for the men in sky blue and white. And, that’s where we went today; up 657m (or 209 places to the top – in football speak!!) above sea level to visit this tiny ... read more

Docking in Ancona we had arranged to join with three other couples to take a mini bus to San Marino. Landlocked San Marino it is one of the world's smallest countries with a population of around 33,400 and is said to be the world's oldest surviving republic. Tourism is one of the main sources of income with over three million visitors every year, luckily we had a great driver who got us there early and we were able to explore this small republic before it got too busy. Three fortres towers perch on the steep slopes facing the Adriatic coast and the two that you could ascend Ron of course wanted to climb; the view was worth the effort. We were lucky to be able to see the changing of the guard before visiting the still ... read more

Day 26 - Mon. Oct. 17 - Port of call: Ravenna, Italy. Weather: Heavy fog in the morning and partly sunny in the afternoon - temperatures of 68°F/20°C We were not sure this morning if we were going to see anything out on tour as an extremely thick fog surrounded the port city of Ravenna. Ravenna was once the former capital of the Western Roman Empire and now is very much an industrial centre. It does lay claim to several sites with beautiful mosaics making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but our focus today lay elsewhere. Many cruise ships stop at this port city because the port also serves as a gateway to the Apennine Republic of San Marino, the oldest surviving sovereign state in the world, and also one of the smallest at 60.57 ... read more

Brekkie at 9.30am, yay sleep in. We dock around 3.30pm Greek time (2.30 Italy time) and make our way to San Marino. We had to pack only carry on luggage for the ships because there is no room for suitcases in the cabins. All our suitcases are in our bus in the bottom of the ship, we can't get to them till the day after tomorrow when we get to Venice. So we had to pack for two days. Two days because we can't get the bus into San Marino, it's too small for buses so we leave the bus outside town and walk to our hotel. Not a problem. San Marino is a state all on its own. A beautiful little town on top of a huge hill with three small castles. This place is ... read more

Sleep-deprived and exhausted from the last few days, an early start to catch my bus from Verona to Rimini probably wasn't the best idea but it was the best and cheapest option I had. So it was probably no surprise - and it has to be said that this is the first time this has happened for a long time - that I overslept having forgot to set an alarm the previous night. I then had forty minutes to get my shit together and sprint to the bus stop; a 35-minute walk away. So if an early start was the last thing I needed at the time, I now - barely able to open my eyes - had a sweaty, exhausting, 25-minute sprint across Verona to catch my bus. It reminded me of old times. Most ... read more
