't Zal nodig geweest zijn zeker ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south from Brasov to Bucharest. We were catching an early train to Bucharest, so we had a quick breakfast of muesli, yoghurt, toast, cheese, salami, scrambled eggs and tea. We grabbed our packs, jumped into a taxi and headed to the Brasov railway station. We wandered through the virtually deserted station, found our train and settled in for the two hour trip to Bucharest. The train was not overly comfortable – it was very hot with a strong smell of rotten eggs which we think was fuel-based and coming through the air-conditioning vents. However, once it chugged out of Brasov, the air conditioning kicked in (lightly) and the smell disappeared. We climbed through the Carpathian Mountains, with mist shrouding the tree tops, then sped along lush green agricultural plains which ... read more

On this the final day of our tour of Romania, we were given a free morning to do as we pleased. After last night's festivities, it looked like everyone was in need of a free morning. The storm that rolled in the last 2 days and brought an early glimpse of winter snow to the town had passed. This morning we were greeted with a cloudless sunny sky, perfect weather for our final day. After breakfast, Shea and I joined Erin and Angie for a walk back into the town to do a little shopping in the markets. There were a good number of other visitors here this morning to do their shopping and enjoy the sunny morning skies. Nothing really caught my eye while I was exploring the markets. I did purchase a few magnets ... read more

We woke up this morning with a full day to explore the Romanian capital before meeting our G Adventures tour group tonight at 5:00pm. With this being our only day in Bucharest, we had to make the most of the day in order to see as much as we can. Waking up to sunny skies, it was perfect weather today to explore Bucharest. After another delicious buffet style breakfast at our hotel, we headed out and walked north along Calea Victoriei with the goal of getting to the National Village Museum. We walked by notable landmarks such as the National University Library, the Arts Collection Museum, and the George Enescu National Museum before locating a Starbucks for a short coffee break. Having now entered what must be a university area of the city, we were now ... read more

We started our day with breakfast at what is quickly becoming our favourite spot: Paul. Very popular cafe about a block away from our hotel with magnificent pastries and gorgeous sammiches. Also, the ladies who work there are the friendliest in Bucharest! It’s nice to start your day with a smile (a rare enough commodity that we notice when we get one). Gold star, Paul. You are excellent. My must for Bucharest was the Village Museum (an open air museum with historic homes and structures from different parts of Romania that were relocated to Bucharest and restored). To get there we took a lacklustre HOHO which took us by the Parliament (ridiculously huge) before swinging northward to take us to the museum. The museum was Ah-Mah-Zing. We spent 4 hours there (including lunch at a cafe ... read more

Our journey started with a few days in Kiev, the capital and largest city in Ukraine. As part of the former Soviet Union we were pleasantly surprised to find that the place was not as 'Russian-esque' as we had expected. In fact the whole place, the local people and the wide, tree-lined streets had a really nice upbeat feeling about them. In fact quite a few of the locals did not like the Russians at all due to past occupations, so it was quite funny to see a special souvenir sold in the markets of toilet paper adorned with the face of Vladimir Putin. Maybe we should have bought a few rolls! We saw the highlights of the city on an organised walking tour, and among the various members of our group was a stunningly beautiful ... read more

A short entry this time (I hear many sighs of relief), but before my return to the daily grind there was time to fit in a last-minute city break, hmm, where to go? Rolling the dice of European destinations, the city of Bucharest was the winner. Although August in Bucharest is usually quite hot anyway, our visit coincided with heatwave covering a large swath of Europe, still I’d recently come back from the heat of the Gobi Steppe, so I was sure I’d manage. We flew out from Luton airport, not one I usually fly out of and I quickly realised why, it’s a bit of a shed, still we managed to struggle through (First World Woes) and arrive at our destination without too much hassle. We touched down at Henri Coandă Airport and caught an ... read more

I arrived in Bucharest on a sweltering hot afternoon in June. My guidebook had said there was a bus from the airport to the city where my cousin Lynn had rented an apartment in the old quarter. After paying a modest 9 Lei, I boarded the bus with my suitcase, hoping that it would become obvious where I was to alight. A young man gave up his seat for me and I asked him where the old quarter was. The terminus, he said so I sweated gently for 40 minutes before the bus came to a halt at Piatra Unirii, Union Square. After consulting two policemen and a couple of waitresses, I eventually found Lynn at the Grand Van Gogh Café where I drank two glasses of lager to cool off. She had rented an Air ... read more

"Always catch a bus if you can", said the guy at the hostel in Veliko Tarnovo. Shame there no buses to Bucharest then. Only trains. Thus, I was on my first train journey for first time in a month, when I was in Italy/San Marino. And it was nice crossing a border with company, especially a long, 7-hour journey with so many stops. With me were three others from the hostel in Veliko Tarnovo; American Maura and fellow Kiwis Tom and Louis, who despite their rather contrasting appearances, are quite astonishingly, brothers. It was nice to hang out with some Kiwis again for a longer period of time - I haven't met too many on my travels to be honest and many of those meetings were rather fleeting. Only Andy in Havana springs to mind in ... read more
