I guess I took my time getting ready this morning, but I did eat some of their free breakfast. I was going to ask our hostess to do me two favors, call a taxi and make a reservation at the next place, Caminha. When I checked, she wasn’t quite awake, so I just asked to call a taxi. Right around 9am my taxi showed up and I asked him to take me to Viana do Castelo, just on the other side of the long bridge, about where I’d left off yesterday. I had my first coffee at a café next to the one from yesterday, since that one was just opening.
The first hour wasn’t too bad, then I started climbing, for about the next hour or so, and with no place to get coffee or drinks the whole 2 hours. When I finally went down hill and reached a small town, the previously advertised café, Café- Bar Central, was closed for their Vacation! Luckily, just up the hill (again), I found another bar-café, but it seemed to be closed too. Just when. I was getting frustrated, I noticed a door next door that was open. I went inside and discovered
it was another door to the bar that was closed, but the owner was nice enough to sell me a Coke and let me use the restroom. Before I could finish my drink, he came out apologizing that he was locking the door. I said thanks for the drink, and away he went.
For about the next two and a half hours, I climbed and climbed, feeling so lucky I’d gotten my cold drink and used the restroom. Although a lot of it was through pretty woods, it was still mostly up, sometimes steeply. When I finally came out of the woods on the outskirts of Vila Praia de Ancora, civilization looked soooo good. I reached the beach road knowing my destination, Caminha, was still several miles away, and my back started getting sore. Nothing I could adjust seemed to help, so I stopped at a bar on the outskirts, had a Coke and popped 2 ibuprofen. That seemed to help after a while, but by the time I entered the outskirts of Caminha it was getting sore again.
I finally found the Albergue de Peregrinos, got one of the last rooms, and went out to lunch/dinner right
next door. I had a delicious hamburger, which I couldn’t quite finish, then walked a few blocks up the street to a supermarket. I bought a vegetable lasagna in case I got hungry, two cokes for the night, and splurged on a mango. The mango alone was supposed to cost 6 euros a kilo (I wanted it so badly I didn’t care), but it was so ripe the lady sold it to me for half price. I put it in the hostel’s freezer for a bit, then wolfed it down. It was soooo good. I’m sharing a bunk with a guy that snores, which he apologized for, but I told him I’d take my hearing aids out, so it will be okay.
Tomorrow I hope to catch a ferry to Valenca where I’ll be back on the Central route, and soon after in Spain.

Just by viewing your wonderful photographs convinces me that you really enjoyed your vacation. I see you had a few issues with securing food, but you always managed to seek alternative ways to find that meal!
