The sail from Faial to Sao Jorge was a pleasant 4 hour crossing. When we called the harbor master on the VHF we were told there was no room in the inn but that we could tie up to the reception area (a high concrete wall). The bull was definitely not happy as you can see by his posture here – luckily there were stone walls surrounding the pasture and the bull was on a rope.

The dessert, calama, that Riu made us was delicious. Lucky for us he was willing to also share the recipe so we can make it for ourselves as well! You don’t have to bake it, just make it, refrigerate it and then enjoy!

In front of the memorial to Joao deSousa there is a sculpture of the dragon (remember that St. George (Jorge) slayed a dragon).

We saw much larger herds of cattle on Sao Jorge than any of the other islands so far. They sell the milk to the cheese factories located here.

This bell tower that had been part of a church in Urzelina is the only part that remains after the volcano buried the rest of the church in 1808.
