The sail from Faial to Sao Jorge was a pleasant 4 hour crossing. When we called the harbor master on the VHF we were told there was no room in the inn but that we could tie up to the reception area (a high concrete wall). Like so many others we love to travel and we love to sail so cruising makes a lot of sense. Janice has retired from Cornell as a business manager and Bob has retired from South Seneca school district as the high school principal. It's time to sell the house, get rid of whatever doesn't fit on our 40 foot Caliber LRC named Tsamaya (this means Travel Well in Setswana) and set off to see the world. These events bring out the young and the old to watch.

Good thing there are walls

The bull was definitely not happy as you can see by his posture here – luckily there were stone walls surrounding the pasture and the bull was on a rope.

Iheu do Topo

The Iheu do Topo is located at the far eastern end of the island & is a nesting area for many birds and was used for pasture for cattle brought in by boat.

It was obvious that the carvings were being cleaned up and refinished - lots of details

You definitely want to have good brakes on the plane at the end of this runway on Sao Jorge.

These are friends that we made while on Sao Jorge, Riu and Carolina. Thanks for everything!

A Great Dessert

The dessert, calama, that Riu made us was delicious. Lucky for us he was willing to also share the recipe so we can make it for ourselves as well! You don’t have to bake it, just make it, refrigerate it and then enjoy!

Slay the Dragon

In front of the memorial to Joao deSousa there is a sculpture of the dragon (remember that St. George (Jorge) slayed a dragon).

Lots of Grazing Land

We saw much larger herds of cattle on Sao Jorge than any of the other islands so far. They sell the milk to the cheese factories located here.

Higher Elevations

When in the higher elevations you drive through the clouds that roll in.

All that Remains of the Church

This bell tower that had been part of a church in Urzelina is the only part that remains after the volcano buried the rest of the church in 1808.

One of the more detailed stone designs on the pedestrian walkway in Velas.

Common Buildings in Velas

We enjoy seeing the color of the buildings here as well as the many balconies built into the design
