Travelling days are always long and tedious adventures. Finding the right check in for the luggage, then the right boarding gate which is usually 40 miles away. Landing in Lisbon and after collecting our luggage, we are required to walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 to find the check in for Faro. Then it‘s finding the boarding gate which in this case is an even bigger challenge. We know the area but not the gate number and it doesn’t come up on the board until it’s time to board. But got there successfully - then hurry up and wait!
We have met some really nice people. In Toronto desperate for a beer we scanned the seating area for a table - none to be had. A couple offered to share their table and we soon became buddies. They were from Sault Ste. Marie and going to Cuba. I saw a picture of their beautiful granddaughter being coy about having her picture taken. The wife’s family came from New Brunswick so she and Anne hit it off. Then there was a group on the transfer bus from the plane to the terminal who made room for us to sit down.
A couple of them were work partners and were going to Germany for work before returning to Lisbon for a short vacation with the others in the group.
Soon we will be winging our way to Faro airport to be picked up by Anne’s brother Peter to be whisked off to his rental house which is in Albufeira just west of Faro. From the plane window I see mountains with roads snaking around and through; a lot of water. There are flooded fields that almost look live rice paddies. And blocks of creamy houses with red roofs.
Well - I have never stayed in a super luxury home before and this is certainly a first. What a wonderful place. Marble abounds on the front entry steps, the inside stairway and the shiny polished floor in the living/dining area. There are 4 bedrooms each with its own bathroom. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms so Anne and I get to choose our own room. Bonus is a French door which opens onto a marble balcony running the width of the house. Hmmm…thinking of sitting out there with my coffee tomorrow morning. In the close distance the view is spectacular looking across
houses onto the ocean.
Portugal is a country of mountains and valleys and palm trees and all the houses are either off white or a creamy pale yellow. They are coated with stucco made from the local stone which appears to be a yellow limestone. It is mighty impressive to see large areas of elegant pale ochre homes set off with the red tile roofs and bordered by palms.
The first sensation on exiting the airport is the balmy warm air highlighted with real sunshine which I haven’t seen for a very long time.
Our challenge for the rest of the day is to stay awake - I have to poke Anne a few times when I catch her with her eyes closed.
Dinner tonight was good long walk down to the marina. Anne and I had seafood paella which was delicious and of course a good glass of red wine. The walk back was designed to wear off the dinner calories - it was all uphill. Just what we needed to wake us up and give a shot of energy.
Early to bed tonight…
