I'm currently hanging out in my uncle's study in Bielsko-Biala in southern Poland, looking out at mountain ranges covered in snow. The snow which has been covering the ground in the backyard for the last few days has finally melted. Just as we arrived, it started snowing in Poland for the first time since before Christmas. Just our luck! It has been so bloody cold and its about to get a hell of a lot colder - tomorrow the forecast says rain and snow and max of 3, and for the days after a max of 0 and below. I'm so sick of the cold already! It was a novelty the first night, when upon walking out of a bookshop I found the city completely white and looking beautiful, with gorgeous big snowflakes falling. But the next day was already a lot colder, the snow had turned into slush, and it was all just miserable. So we've been hanging out at home mainly, eating. God the food here is so good! Awesome sledzie (herring/rollmops), huge deepfried pierogi, neverending supply of great sour dough bread. And the more u eat the more u want. Definately kicks the ass out of the food

on the plane. That was really weird - they feed u so many times! We got fed at 5.30pm, 7.30pm, 10pm, 1am & 5am, with snacks in between. They don't believe in letting u sleep much. Although it wasn't that bad. For a 30 hour flight it really wasnt as tiring as i thought it was going to be. The trip was actually pretty good until we hit Warsaw airport. What a mess! It took us an hour to get through really disorganised passport control, then another hour to find my suitcase, after which we found out they'd lost mums suitcase (it arrived at our house some 2 days later). Avoid Warsaw airport at all costs!! I can't say i have much more to write at the moment. I've hardly been anywhere nor seen anyone yet except my grandma who is already driving me nuts. I did spend 2 hours wandering in a bloody frozen forest where there was nothing to see today tho. How exciting - not! Needless to say, i am not happy with my uncle for dragging me out there. Other things which i've noticed so far - No showers! No, people arent smelly, they just love

their bathtubs. Its really weird. Even stranger considering everything here is tiny! Flats in the city are so small u can hardly breathe. 'Streets' if u can call them that in villages are barely wide enough for a Fiat going in one direction. God knows how 4wds get through, let alone 2 going in opposite directions. But while flats are small, houses out in the country are massive! And some are gorgeous. There's lots of old dachas around here (rich folks' holiday homes from before WWI), some beautifully restored, but some unfortunately very run down. Lots of buildings here are really run down while others arent finished. In lots of places you can tell that money is tight, which is a common problem in this country. Everything is pretty grey and miserable at the moment, and the weather and season probably dont help (theres no leaves on any trees, no flowers, everythings snowed under). Tomorrow we celebrate Easter. It'll be interesting to see all the religious pomp and ceremony which goes on...
