Cruise day 4
A golden tour from Andalsnes and two annoying Maitre Ds July 18th 2019
Today was a pokey-stick-day. I have no idea where Claire gets her pokey sticks from but she manages to find one everywhere we go. Today she began poking me with her latest at 3:15am. Yes, that’s am. 3:15 in the morning. But I got up and we headed up on deck for what turned out to be quite a decent sunrise so I’m glad I persuaded Claire to join me.
We were cruising down a fjord and so there were some decent photos to be had in the peace and quiet. Surprisingly not many other people joined us....only three in fact....maybe Claire has all the pokey sticks....
After a couple more hours sleep we got up properly and ate a hearty breakfast; well I did, Claire had mainly mushrooms. Spritely had told us some tips for joining a coach tour run by the cruise company and she turned out to be right. Sit by the exit of the meeting room to get a good seat on the bus and get a seat near the door so you can get off first
at each stop.
Being 20 years younger than anyone else on our bus we got a great seat and someone else remarked that there was less elbowing than usual. Spritely had been right and had commented how quickly these old people could move when they had to. She is 79.
Anyway, The Golden Route tour we were on, chosen for squeezing as much as possible into a day. The guide was Norwegian but had superb English and talked pretty much the whole tour with interesting information, stories and history. The scenery was spectacular and we went up and down two roads with crazy hairpin bends. One had 12 of them and one had 11 and both can be closed for many months a year as snow makes them impassabale.
We stopped at a few places to get photos of gorges, mountains, waterfalls etc and learnt a lot about trolls which were everywhere. Not real ones of course, they only come out at night silly. We took a ferry across a fjord, had lunch at a fancy hotel where the maitre d was a bit of a mizzhog and we had a three course meal when they usually
serve a smorgasbord. I love a smorgasbord me, well who wouldn’t? But the food was okay anyway. We even chatted to some more people, I know, get us! Quite the socialites now!
During the day we got notice that our house purchase is back on thank goodness.
We arrived back at Andalsnes at just after 5 and had a quick shufty round the village before being back on the boat just before 17:30. Claire was pleased as she was the last one back on board.
After some more photographs and planning what’s going where in our new house we eschewed the dinner setting and went to the buffet again. I’d started filling my starters plate when the maitre d told me shorts were not allowed at dinner. In the buffet they were 3/4 length shorts which Claire also had on. But still I went to change. No dinner otherwise! Good job the food was good. Fancy not going to the smart casual dinner sitting and still failing the dress requirements....at a buffet!
