Woolly says – It’s Burpday time again, I can’t wait to open my presents and it looks as though this will be the best one yet as I bounced onto the plane and ensured that the women had stowed my luggage and snack supplies. A short time later and all we had to do was find our accommodation ...this proved to take longer than the flight had done! With pistachio levels dropping to a dangerous level I plodded behind the girls as we walked up and down the busy streets of Amsterdam, suggesting that we ask, having walked several miles from central station we turned tail and walked back the way we had already come.....how do they do it? Why don’t they listen to me! Finally after several wrong turns and an epic moan from the short one in the party we booked in and with the cold and dark surrounding us set forth to find food. Woolly says – our first morning proved to be cold but bright and having added an extra layer to my clothing and ensured that I had enough snacks to consume in case of misdirection or getting lost again, I led the way to Dam square which had a huge Ferris wheel in operation, listening to the screams of the tourists as their feet appeared to touch the tops of the buildings was cruelly delightful as I spotted the first of days tourist spots. Having been to the vibrant city on a number of occasions I had selected a range of interesting places that we hadn’t already been to, this temporary exhibit seemed a good place to start.
I’d never realised that the mammoth liked Marilyn Monroe...... Woolly says – I’m a mammoth of mystery! Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson June 1st 1926 – August 5th 1962) was an American actress and model. Famous for playing "dumb blonde" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. I shuffled through the door, inside was warm and having left the women sorting out the audio guides I found myself in a cinema room. .........the style icon of the fifties, the hour long film gave us a great insight into her life before we wandered round looking at the dresses she had once worn and gazing at old photo’s and memorabilia whilst listening to her music.
Woolly says – Jo’s face lit up as we arrived in front of an exhibit about one of her favourite films, Some Like it Hot, not one of Ms Monroe’s best in my view but then I didn’t have a childhood crush on Tony Curtis! Having admired the most iconic dress of all time we found ourselves back at the start and facing the chill of the city air, for once no prompting was needed and without a word from myself I was happily seated in front of a large hot waffle dripping with chocolate sauce and banana’s, who could feel the cold when you have food like this! It was too good to miss and as we set off to one of the many cheese museums I tried to refrain from mopping up the chocolaty paw prints that were following us. Woolly says – I had tried to lick it off but saving it for later seemed to mean leaving it on the pavements! The cheese shop was a great find and having sampled each and every type I started at the beginning again which was when I realised that one of the staff was heading in my direction, attempting to blend in with the colourful blocks of creamy loveliness didn’t appear to work, neither did a quick chat with the rather small cow in the corner, I smiled happily at the lady, ‘did you wish to buy anything sir?’ I nodded quickly and pointed at Jo who was busy on her third circuit of the shop, the lady walked in her direction and I took the opportunity to retry another few samples. Full to bursting it appeared that it was time to sit down and having made our way into a warm smoky bar, I felt my eyes closing as the women sat watching the world go by.
When the snoring became too much and before the other customers started to complain we decided to wander and find something to eat. Woolly says – Wow food time comes round quickly here, I’d only been asleep for a few minutes and having surveyed the tummy region I wasn’t convinced that I could manage a whole meal just yet, Jo and Zoe didn’t seem to agree and as we tucked into a scrumptious Indian meal it appeared that my stomach was coping well. It always fascinates me how much Amsterdam changes at night and takes on a new quality under the neon street and shop signs, the canals were busy and having paused to watch the world at a waterside bar it seemed that waffles were up again, I looked at the women in wonder, where on earth they were putting this food and hoping that Jo would have a bag full of waffles from her left overs for my midnight snack!
