After our last day in Paris was spent in Disneyland, it was onto Amsterdam- the adults playground. Arriving at Central Station after a three hour train trip, we easily walked to our hotel- all done up like a train.
As we did in Paris, we hopped on the Hop On Hop Off bus, getting off at two stops:
The Heineken Experience would have to be one of the best brewery tours I have done (Sorry Guiness and Coors). Most of the attention is paid to the history of Heineken and while time is paid to how beer is brewed, it is not the focus of the tour. The tour is also very interactive which keeps it fun and comes with two free beers at the end.
From there it was to Anne Franks House. Everyone knows the story of Anne Frank so I wont go into it here only to say the museum was fantastic and gave a great insight into what life must've been like.
We decided to spend our first night in Amsterdam with a walking tour of the Red Light District. Our guide was a friendly English bloke who was extremely knowledge
about the area dispite claiming never to have visited a sex worker while there. He took us for a very thorough tour of the area, telling us many facts as we went, including not to take photos for fear of a smashed camera or getting a not so pleasant shower...
The next day we headed off on a day trip to the country side of Holland, stopping at Rotterdam (In Chris' words "We've left Perth and gone to Bunbury, not Margaret River.. Bunbury"!"), then onto Delft and finishing at the Hague.
On the way, we drove past Amsterdam Airport, planes crossing the highway (as you do) to reach the runway. Amsterdam Airport is the lowest in the world, about 4m under sea level. Many parts of the country are on re-claimed land, hence why they are so low.
Delft was an interesting stop on the way to the Hague. Delft is home to Delft Pottery where pieces are made by hand and authenicated with a certificate.
I really wanted to visit the Hague in Holland, home to the International Crime Court where individuals are tried and The Interational Court of Justice where disputes between countries are
solved. Unfortunately we just stopped outside, but it was still good to see.
On our last day in Amsterdam, we decided to shop and hit the Red Light District during the day. Once you get over the pot smell wherever you go, its quite a nice place. Deciding to people watch from a comfortable pub for a few hours, we spent the time watching the Red Light windows across the canal (well Chris did, I spent more time watching the kitten who lived in the pub!), and seeing what I would class as the least attractive girl getting all the action while the beauty queens were left waiting. Chris and I put this down to the queens being more intimatidating. Just to get the full Amsterdam experience, Chris (after giving me his money and credit cards), went up to ask the rates before walking away. We decided to see a sex shop (2 Euro for 2mins!) before heading off to our Romantic Candlelight Wine tour through the canals..
Unfortunately we might have had a beer too many while people watching so neither of us were quite in the mood for the tour but it was still very pretty.
Off to Cologne next, its getting colder.. "Let it snow let it snow let it snow!"
