Edit Blog Post
Hi all,
First of all we'd like to thank everyone that contacted us either through leaving a comment or message on this blog, sending an email or text message to us or speaking to us on the phone or in person and wishing us all a great time, all were very much appreciated so thanks again.
Also thanks to all those people that invited either me or the 3 of us to send of parties, again we enjoyed them all and we did appreciate those too.
We got away on the Hull to Rotterdam ferry on Tuesday night after the ferry was delayed 3 hours......I thought great start that is!!! but we made up time overnight and by the time we hit the road to Amsterdam we were only a couple of hours behind.
Our first campsite is Camping Zeeburg which is in the north east suburbs of 'Dam' and it's a mixture of touring families and backpacking students with a hippy feel to the place. We are on the waters edge (like most places in Dam) so the kids have been out kayaking from the site and they can head off anywhere on the cycle tracks from
here as there are many canals and rivers to bike alongside so thats kept them busy.
We've been here 4 days and had a great time, from the site it's easy to either tram or cycle into Dam centre so we've done both over the 4 days, the only thing about the cycle tracks in the Netherlands is that scooters can use them as well as pedestrians and cyclists so when some nutter doing 40 on a scotter is coming at you on the wrong side of the track it's best to just get out of the way cos they ain't gonna stop.
Like most people from Hull we only ever see 2 or 3 streets in Amsterdam (you know the ones) and a couple of coffee shops and during the 8 hours the Dutch dash allows you in Amsterdam your battered by dinner time and spend the rest of the day sat slumped in a corner or flaked out somewhere (a bit like Creaser after 3 pints of Carling!!) so we don't see hardly anything of the place, well we've either cycled or used the tram to go everywhere around the centre and it's a lovely place,
Kayaking at Zeeburg
Stu did you spot the Egyptian goose?? from the buildings to the canals, the shops, the museums, the bars and the squares there's so much to see and do. We've done the canal boat trip, been to a museum and browsed the shops and apart from this morning (Saturday) the weather has been sunny and high 20's so we've really enjoyed it.
The campsite area we were put in was a real mixture of nationalities and over the 4 days all 8 places have been and gone and more nationalities arrived, so already we have seen Spanish, Italian, Austrian, Czech, Dutch, German and a fews brits and nearly all have come over at seperate times to talk which is nice, the Spanish couple also gave us some tram tickets as they were going back to Spain and couldn't use them yesterday, so I spoke to more neighbours on this campsite in 4 days than down my street in 8 years!!!
Well it's our last day on this site today and depending on the weather we will probably bike into Dam again but take a look at some of the areas we haven't been yet, then tomorrow we head south to a Theme park called Efteling
where we will have a day in the park and 3 days on the site nearby, then on Wednesday we leave the Netherlands and hit our second country Belgium where we have site booked in a lake/woodland area called Baalsie Hei near Turnhout, so depending on wi-fi access i will report back next weekend.
Take care everyone and keep in touch.
Talking of keeping in touch, all of you that either wrote a comment or sent a message to this blog, I have kept them all private and i won't publish them on here, so keep them coming it's nice to read them all.
