Well it has been an interesting week, I’ll tell you that much. Tuesday (08/02/2011) I had a bit of a late start. Eventually I reared my morning-face out of the depths of the multiple layers of sheets I habituate nightly. The aim on Monday was to obtain my BSN (social-security/ ID) number. It turned out that I needed a birth certificate, parental birth details and a whole lot of other info; which I now had in my possession due to the interwebnet. I stumbled down for breakfast only to find out I didn’t need any of that. Rene had phoned the Belastingsdienst buildings in Eindhoven. He’d found a way for me to just show my passport and proof of residence and thereby obtain a BSN number. Wednesday morning bright and early I had to be in ... read more

Thursday saw me begin another adventure to a place nearby. This time the destination was not as close as the town-centre where the bank and their coffee-offering staff lay, but a far more daunting distance. Eindhoven looked on the map (‘plattegrond’) about 50km away, but I forget how over-sized their maps are made. I’m not sure if this is to satisfy their insecurity-complex of such a small country or just to play with tourist’s minds; nevertheless it was only about 10 min away (with the wind…). Opa dropped me off next to one of Eindhoven’s coffee shops. Yes, one of those coffee shops. This is the first time that the only looks I got were a mix of complacency and relaxed interest. These people were far too chilled to be drinking any form of coffee. After ... read more

I thought I’d take the time to exhibit some nostalgia and accompany my first photo album of “University Memories” with some of the best adventures I’ve had over the past four years. Please, I say please, either comment or send me an email (stu15130959@gmail.com) or Facebook message if you have any fond memories with me that I’ve left out! I’ll just do it in summation as an essay on each will surely take aaages. They’re not in any chronological order, simply what I remembered when I remember it  I remember:  A particular friend of mine (claiming she was spiked) taking a bath at around 2am in the morning. 100% naked and not caring, whilst splashing and making gurgling sounds like a baby for fun. I was called as a backup (or just to witness ... read more

Departure, arrival and settling in Monday was greeted with enthusiasm, anxiety and mostly apprehension as to what the rest of the day would have in store for this 'newbie' traveler. A quick coffee was shared with two of my closest and oldest friends in the morning before making sure bags were packed and weighed. A last skinny-dip in the pool was a suitable goodbye to sunny South Africa and the warm weather. At the airport the bags were wrapped in plastic to preserve the highly-valuable rooibos tea and home-made CD's. My Sector9 trilam was also included in the wrapping process and the skateboard stuck out just as badly from the bag as I did as a foreigner when arriving in Holland. I was very fortunate to meet an acquaintance in the CT airport. Torbjorn was a ... read more

Hier ... read more

Javier and Carmen were sneaky this morning and snuck into our area in the inner city with their cars to pick us up, sneaky, sneaky! So the plan was to get loaded up with our gear and get out really quick before the police saw them. That was the plan… Everything was all prepaid so all that was left to do was pay for one bottle of water and bolt. But then the hotel tried to charge for breakfast, got that sorted and then it was 2.25 Euros for the water so I paid that, then the printer didn’t work and he scuttles to another office for our receipt, finally he comes back and says he needs 2 more cents! Finally, 20 minutes and 2 cents later we are on our way! So we drive to ... read more

After what has surely been one of the coldest, certainly snowiest, winters in recent memory here in the Netherlands, we finally got a touch of blue skies this week. Two weeks ago, the snow subsided and made way for some truly welcomed rain, which brought with it the warmer temperatures from the south and west. However, nothing gold, or in this case, grey can stay, and blue skies have arrived joined with freezing cold weather. This odd combination reminds me of Colorado, and makes us all wonder whether or not spring is around the corner. The last year has been a hard-working time of learning, dedication, training, and music making in order to reach our dreams here. I suppose it's a testament to our single-minded focus that it's been so long since I've last posted. To ... read more
