What a great day of sight seeing!!! I went to bed at 8 pm last night, and had a wake up call for 6 am (why???). Slept in until 7:30. Got my gear together and headed for the old town of Valletta just a few blocks away. I opted out ot the expensive hotel buffet breakfast and got an ok "ham roll" from the street vendors for one euro. First stop was the Cathedral in the center of Valletto (main town, walkable). I found it last evening on my 4 hour "walk of the lost." I had a map but somehow I ended up at every end of the town except mine! (My great uncle Walter Williams said: "If you have a tongue in your head and money in your pocket, you can go anywhere." I have arrived in Malta, and checked into the hotel. The flight was uneventful. I flew from KCI to Detroit to Rome. I could not print a boarding pass for the flight to Malta before I left, and that caused a snag. But nice people with bigger problems of missed flights let me go first and I ran all the way to the gate in the nick of time.My luggage appeared properly, and I got an 8 Euro bus directly to my hotel, the Hotel Grand Excelsior. In general, Malta is sunny, warm, historic, and easy to get around in due to the fact that everyone speaks English. Public transportation is frequent and inexpensive. People are nice and helpful, but not too overly friendly. My Topeka-time watch says 7:30 am, but it is 2:30 pm here. ... read more

At least eight out of every ten people who I knew had been to Malta hadn’t recommended it. They told how it was dry and barren, there were no good beaches, it was very built up, and it’s baking hot. True, if you go in July or August, it will be baking hot, dry and barren. True, you can barely get a razor blade between the hotels at the resorts. And true, it mostly has a rocky shoreline with only a few, albeit stony, beaches. I think those eight out of ten people were after a beach holiday of the type you get on other Mediterranean islands such as the Balearics or the Greek Islands and, for them, Malta doesn’t match up. Fair enough, I can see their point, but that’s not the type of holiday ... read more

MALTA Strictly speaking, this isn’t our first trip of 2012 as we were lucky enough to have 3 weeks in Spain in February. The weather there was glorious and we met up with friends and spent a lot of the time walking in the mountains and socialising. We had hired a car as well so were able to go to the lakes and El Chorro and at last did a Field Club walk where we found the Arab Steps – an old set of steps cut into a mountain, which was built as an escape route for the Moors when they conquered Andalucia. Fantastic views, as there is on most of the walks we do in Spain...... Anyway, our first glimpse of Malta from the plane was very clear and we were able to pick out ... read more

In case you don't realize why I'm here, I'm here for a week-long management training program called 'Take Off!'. 12 of us from various EC centers were selected to come - EC Central, Malta, Boston, Toronto, New York, London, and USA (me!). Throughout the week we received training on various performance-related skills and were split into two teams to develop a project and present it to members of the board. Our team's project was to find a way to target EC's staff, students, agents, in communicating our 4 core values. I'm not a fan of more abstract tasks like this, but in the end our team one and it was a fairly well-thought-out proposal. It nonetheless caused major stress. The program itself consisted of interactive lectures on things like self-awareness, unlocking creativity, time management, etc. The ... read more

Sunday morning was up to a rough start. The plan was to meet Jackie, a colleague of mine who works in Central Admissions, at the main gate around 9am. She was going to take me to the fishing village of Marsaxlokh. Well...that didn't happen, and I slept through my alarm, getting up at 10:17. I will need to somehow make this up to her...Anyway, I had booked a taxi transfer at 10:30am so I basically threw all of my crap into my bags and booked it downstairs to check out. The trip to St. Julian's, which I had done both prior nights, was quick enough and I was back at the George hotel in maybe 20 minutes. This would be a major upgrade and is the fanciest hotel I've stayed in on my own. Thanks, EC! ... read more

Day two started off on the later side, with a housekeeper knocking on my door and waking me up around 11:30am – oopsie! I wasn’t feeling too hot, but Malta’s most impressive church, St. John’s co-cathedral, was only open until 12:30 so I had to book it if I wanted to be able to see that. Luckily it was only a couple blocks from my hotel. Built between 1573 and 1578, the church has equal status to St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina, hence the term “co-cathedral”. It was constructed as the conventual church of the Knights of St. John, and despite its rather plain façade the interior is spectacular. The blue walls studded with Maltese crosses were for some reason the most beautiful part to me, but opulence was everywhere. The floor was a patchwork ... read more

Well it’s certainly been a 24-hour journey! At 4:30pm Boston time I was heading out from Faneuil Hall catching the Blue Line toward “Airport” to face my flight to that illustrious island of Malta. After almost two years working with EC my trip to our Central Offices was finally under way! The trip itself was fairly underwhelming – no major delays or traumas that I’m accustomed to. Boston-Heathrow via Virgin Atlantic was quite pleasant. I had never flown them but was definitely a fan of the entertainment selection – I ended up watching Almodóvar’s latest, “The Skin I Live In”, as well as an episode of the revamp of “Absolutely Fabulous” on BBC and the first half an hour of “An American Horror Story”. Food was edible - I had the beef slop adorned with ... read more

This morning we all woke up refreshed and ready to explore. So we paid like 5 euro for buffet breakie which was awesome! We all were stuffed to the brim. Nice day so decided to go to the old capital for the am and head to a beach or the pool for the arvo. When we steppe doutside though it was really cold cos the wind was bitter again like last ight. So, all went back inside to sadly ditch the summer clothes and rug up more! We had directions and instructions as to what buses to catch but ended up wiating like 40min for the 1st bus, grabbed a drink and sat on the side of the road next to a bomb truck for another about 45mins waiting for the next bus. After this i ... read more
