During the summer period my wife Cigdem and I were not traveling, which is against our nature. An unexpected weekend duty at work made me to decide to have at least a weekend away which is not close but also not too far. After some browsing on internet, one small place took my attention, which is called Vianden, at Luxemburg.
Spontaneously we booked a hotel room and planned our weekend away. However it was a spontaneous action, we managed to convince our friends Arif & Selma to join us for the weekend. So double fun!
17-07-2010 Finally the day arrived. Early in the morning we drove to the house of Arif and Selma and drove to the direction of Belgium. Slowly when we approached Luxemburg, the landscape changed significantly. The highway changed to curvy roads and the plane land changed to hills and mountains. The distance is about 350 km and it took us more or less 4 hours to arrive at Vianden.
Finally after the last hills and curvy roads, we arrived to the lovely and picturesque village of Vianden. As we didn't want to loose any time, we immediately checked in to
our hotel, dropped our luggage and went out. We started to orient the area close to our hotel and took the very first nice looking terrace to have a quick lunch and some drinks.
We were quite hungry as we travelled quite early and only took a light breakfast, so all of us ordered a whole pizza. In the open air and nice weather we enjoyed our lunch and drinks.
Off course after a heavy lunch we had to digest it by walking a lot. For sure we were at the perfect location for hiking. We walked along the riverside to the other side of Vianden, (and taking continuously pictures) where we arrived to one of the nice attractions, the chairlift.
From the riverside there is a chairlift where you can go to a viewpoint on the mountain. To reach there is also possible by feet. We decided to take a one way and return by feet. there was only one problem. Selma has fear of heights...
It didn't take much effort to convince Selma that by going up will not be scaring for people who have fear of heights and promised that we would return
on foot . So with a one way ticket we sent Arif and Selma with the first chair, and Cigdem and I took the next one. Slowly we went up and looked at the surroundings. The view became nicer and nicer. From above we could see that the town was not very big, but small and romantic. On the river we saw that there was a dam with power plant, just on the edge of the town.
Finally we arrived at the viewpoint, without Selma having a heart attack :-), there we sat on a terrace of a cafe to enjoy the panoramic view of the romantic town. Time passed quickly while enjoying the nice view and eating delicious ice creams. After Selma was 'recovered' we walked to the direction of the Castle trough the woods.
