I’ll actually have one less outfit packed in my bag, since I will wear it on the plane. Whatever else I find I need, I will buy there. Accessories, like more scarves or a belt, can be found at any shopping stand. If I find I need long sleeved shirts, I will find a cheap one at the store. The nice thing is that these purchases double as souvenirs.
Wardrobe Specifics Nearly everything on my clothing list was purchased new for this trip. My standard summer wardrobe is tailored to the Pacific Northwest, which can be warm, but nowhere near as hot as Italy in July. I spent some time researching my clothing choices before purchasing them, but I
am very happy and confident in the pieces I selected.
The first thing I considered was how comfortable I was going to be wearing these clothes all day. I had to be honest with myself about how I needed the clothes to perform. I know I sweat a lot being outdoors in the summer heat, and I didn’t want the embarrassing sweat stains on my clothes. Breathable everything was important.
It also helped to realize that no amount of Prada would convert me into a local. I am going to look like a tourist no matter what. This
blog was helpful and easy to follow. It was written by an American student in Italy and outlines some dos and don'ts about clothes.
For pants, I went with the REI Rendezvous Convertible Pants in coal and the Eddie Bauer Travex Pants in black. My other two bottoms are REI Royal Robins Discovery Skirts in black and charcoal. All of these are moisture-wicking and ultra light-weight. All my tops are from Eddie Bauer and fall into a color theme. This is really useful for mixing and matching outfits, because everything will go together.
Undergarments, the foundation of any wardrobe, were easy. Travel websites unanimously vote for ExOfficio underwear, and I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately, lots of walking and hot weather can combine to make the uncomfortable or embarrassing situation of chafing (another case where I needed to be honest with myself). I found a unique solution with a new pantyhose product,
Assets Ultra Sheers. You can’t get much more light-weight than nylons.
My beach attire was a bit of a challenge. Even though Italian women love two pieces, the curvier-than-average lady is not going to want to wear a bikini. I’d rather face a fashion faux pas than reveal more flesh than may be attractive. Besides, my pale Pacific Northwest complexion will stand out far more than a one-piece swimsuit. I purchased the Miraclesuit Utopia One-Piece from Eddie Bauer, a one-piece disguised as a two-piece.
Everything I am bringing is fashionable, functional, and most of all, comfortable.
