We sadly left our perfect spot and continued on our way out of the mountains, through an area of lagoons and the small city of Oristano and onto the mainly flat Sinis Peninsular. There we saw the fifth century church of San Giovanni di Sinis and close by Tharros, a Carthaginian and Roman settlement located on a narrow spit of land protruding into the sea.

Our next stop was at San Salvatore church which is only used for nine days a year when devotees live in the pilgrims’ lodgings surrounding it. The place looked familiar and that it is because it was used for the set of several spaghetti westerns in the 60s and 70s. Beneath the church were fourth century subterranean chambers with strange black ink drawings on the walls.

We found another beach side place for our night stop in the north of the peninsular but couldn’t see the sea as we were parked behind some dunes
