Defence partners Sophia & Krystyne On the first day of the tournament, we had watched in the stands as Great Britain convincingly defeated Australia. Within the first minute of the game, GB had scored against the roos. As quickly as they had erected their flag in 1776 and claimed an entire continent as their own, they had stolen the game in 2014 as well. While the Aussies tried to battle back, it was too late, and the Union Jack prevailed. As we watched the game from the grand stand, we realised we would have to be at the top of our game, and tough as nails on defense if we were going to have a fighting chance of a win for ourselves.
As the New Zealand Ice Fernz took to the ice for Game Two against Great Britain, we were charged up as anything. With GB ranked at 17th in the World and NZ 28th, we were the clear under-dogs, but ready to prove we could hold our own. While we battled hard at both ends of the rink, the Great Britain team outshot us 52 to 15. Our defensive system appeared to be working better, as we held the score down to 2-0 despite

Luckily, we didn´t have an excessive number of penalties against us as we did in other games, but we didn´t capitalise on our power play opportunities either. I was disappointed in the second period when Great Britain´s #22 DURNELL drove down the ice in a one-on-one against me, skated to the outside and let a shot rip past both me and our goal-tender. As a defenceman, goals that occur while you are on the ice are recorded as part of your +/- stats. If a goal is scored against you it is -1, and if a goal is scored for your team it is +1. This was the only goal scored against the Ice Fernz while I was on the ice during the entire tournament, so overall I was pleased with my defensive play.
