Our car is fixed!! Unfortunately it will be delivered to us in Ravenna up near Venice – two days drive… We have decided to go via Umbria which is the central mountain area of Italy. The weather was still very ordinary with inconsistent drizzle and it was very overcast. The drive into the mountains is amazing. Umbria is famous for its forests and walking but mostly for the tiny medieval hamlets perched on the hilltops. The houses all run together and form an external wall surrounding the village but they seem to have no order to the streets and have just grown together organically.

We stayed in a small hotel in Piedipaterno, one of those tiny hamlets. Set amidst the mountains along a river, there are several walks through the area and it was unfortunate that the rain was quite persistent and that we had no time to stick around to explore.
