San Gimignano
Today was the "sleep in" day, so naturally, Dad and I got up early and took full advantage of the beautiful day by taking a jog around the Tuscan countryside… It was such a lovely day, warm, but breezy. We wound up going out for nearly 1.5hrs! We did get lost a good number of times, and would slow down to find our way again, but it was still a great start to the day. We had a nice breakfast at the hotel and laid out by the pool while Mom and Anna slept through the early afternoon…
Then we had a light lunch at the hotel, which was fantastic. Everything is fantastic. I'm in Italy, blogging in Italy, and I feel like I haven't talked anywhere near enough about the food. Everything is amazing, just in case you're wondering. The people, the food, the wine, everything is just... well, amazing. Do I need to be a little more redundant?
Mom, Dad, and Kathy went out into town for a while and did some shopping/exploring. I, however, needed a day to just lay by the pool, which is exactly what I did. I even feel asleep
for a while, and I would just like to add that I have a tan line. Pasty, little ME! 😊
I made some friends today! I got to chatting with two Australian couples by the pool. They are on quite an incredible vacation - 3 weeks into a 6 week "holiday," as they say. From what I can recall, they have already been to Paris, London, Barcelona, Greece, and are now here in Italy. You would not even believe how far they had to fly to get anywhere in Europe. They started off with an eight-hour flight, then a three-hour layover, and then a 13.5-hour flight! I just couldn't do it! I assume that is why they are here for so long, because it's so much trouble traveling for them. I can imagine they have been planning this trip for quite some time. I had a really nice time talking with them, though. I know it's pretty sad that I can't even make friends my own age (I suppose it would help if I actually spoke more than five words of Italian), but they were so friendly! They even invited me to dinner, but as it turned out, my
family had reservations at the same place and the same time, so everyone met up instead. They also recommended a gelati place up the street, because it has been voted the World's Best Gelato for four years running, and WOW do they deserve their prestigious title. They had a cinnamon flavor, which was literally heaven...
I had a first today! I ordered my first alcoholic drink, entirely on my own, and wasn't turned down, or even carded for that matter! It was very exhilarating ... Don't laugh at me. I'm never leaving. You can't make me.
Dinner was AMAZING! We were seated on a terrace overlooking the beautiful Tuscan countryside that I've been going on and on about. The sky here at dusk is just the prettiest bluest of blue, it's like nothing I've ever seen. Kathy had a brilliant evening, as they had her favorite wine on the menu, an Amarone. Despite the price-tag, she said she just had to splurge, and we were all thankful for it because it was definitely top quality. Luckily, the rest of the meal was very reasonable.
Anna and I went for a, literally, midnight swim this evening. Even though
the pool technically closes at 9:30PM, we decided to be "rule-breakers" and jump in! Well, I pushed her... and then she pushed me, so perhaps it wasn't entirely intentional, but we ended up having a good swim for a time.
We're still searching for the camera cord, I promise I'm not just being lazy. I will upload pictures as soon as I have it!!
