Bruna's family owns a Hinge Factory and both her and Mario work there. I was taken on a tour by Bruna's father who is 87 and founded the factory in the 60s. He was a nice man and talked a lot. He could only speak italian so that was a bit of a problem. Luckily, Alberto was there to translate. They produce 600 different shapes and sizes of hinges and make 50,000 a day. The metal starts in coils in a storage area and is taken to a machine to cut the right size and drill holes. Then the machine curls the metal to make the place for the pin to be inserted. The pins are made from metal rods and are cut by people. Then the hinges are assembled and boxed and shipped out. Not ... read more

I visited Arona and the statue of San Carlo Borromeo with Davide, Bruna's nephew. He could not speak English and I could not speak Italian so it made the day trip interesting! The statue is 35 meters tall and we climbed up through an extremely sketchy ladder on the interior. It felt like being in a mine shaft!! Anyway, we survived and ended the day with gelato.... read more

The second island we visited was Isola Pescatori, also known as Isola Superiore. Unlike Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori did not have a massive garden or beautiful villa. Pescatori is more of a touristy artist village with some nice resteraunts and views. We spent 2 hours on Isola Bella scanning the entire island but it only took 20 minutes to see all of Pescatori. The boats came every hour so we filled the remaining time by eating gelato and skipping rocks. ... read more

Baveno is a beautiful place. I had a relaxing day around Baveno (where i am staying) and got to explore the waterfront. The view is incredible and the church is beautiful as well, just like everything here! Alberto and I spent the day at the lake playing beach volleyball and swimming. He is a great italian teacher!!! Mario and Bruna met up with us and we relaxed for a while, before Mario and I left to play soccer. Mario plays with about 16 other guys every Friday. It was a very international game; one guy from Romania, two from Bolivia, one from Equador, many from Italy, and myself from Stati Uniti. Afterwards, we went to a Pizzeria and pub as a group and had a good time. I've been playing the videogame Assasin's Creed (in Italian) ... read more

Days 24 & 25 Lake Maggiore and the Borromeo Islands Had an amazing lightening show over the lake last night, but were left with a cloudy rainy morning. Not used to this! We popped into nearby Verbania for supplies, hadn’t anticipated it would be shut 12.30-3pm for siesta.... got to get used to this culture change. We were after a reflector board to go on the bike rack, as we were illegal without it travelling in Italy. After a good walk around we found a likely campervan shop, but no one spoke English. My drawing in the air, and Kim pointing to a lady in a red top did not seem to help. Especially as we giggled after he had been pointing to the woman’s breasts! However the good nature and patience of the shop lady ... read more

Day 24 Into Italy! Today we travelled on a glorious sunny day from Interlaken towards Italy and the Lakes, and what a way to arrive. We drove for about an hour towards the Italian border, when the satnav suddenly said ‘then take the ferry’ Alison checked the map - she said there isn’t a lake or river around here, we both looked again incredulously at the satnav and sure enough, there was even a little picture of a boat. Any way a few kilometres, and a toll both later it dawned on us that we were going to travel on the back of a Train! We proceeded to follow the stream of traffic onto an endless stream of carriages. We then entered a tunnel, which to say least was a bit scary as it was pitch ... read more
