Finally... The long awaited blog about my trip to Cremona, Italy.
My flight from Johannesburg to Italy on Lufthansa Airline will be an experience I will never forget!! It was a 22 hour flight which was really long and I still haven't quite recovered from the long journey. This flight was my first international flight ever, so it was a completely new experience for me. I made a complete idiot of myself when I asked the guy sitting next to me (ironically he was Italian) whether or not we had to pay for the dinner and breakfast, where the menu was that we could choose from and if we had to pay for any other in flight services that might be on offer.
He thought this was very amusing and told me that you do not pay for the dinner or breakfast as it is included in your flight ticket, the menu consisted of choosing between chicken or beef, and that all other services on offer where free. Now being from South Africa where things are never free, this came as a complete shock!
The flight gives you a little pillow and blanket, it has this really cool touch
screen TV behind each chair with movies, TV programmes, games, news, language programmes etc available to entertain you during the flight. Needless to say I never slept a wink on the flight.
I am staying in a village called Cremona, Italy. It has a lane for walking, and cycling and then the cars. Which is very different from Johannesburg. Their version of the grocery store is called a Simply, you can cycle and leave your bicycle anywhere you want without having to worry if it will be there when you get back. The are no clubs or night clubs here which is ok, there are bars.
In the city centre there is a cathedral which in Italian is called a Duomo. There are also churches and old buildings everywhere you look. They have a cafe everywhere you look, a chocolate shop, pizzarias, clothing stores and pastry shops with the most delicate and decadent delicacies.
Yesterday I went for lunch at a pancake shop and had a Crepe with Nutella, fruit and cream. Nutella is very big here! They only have 2 kinds of coffees you can have Espresso and depending on the cafe a Cupaccino. The first
time I had an Espresso I was jumping of the walls!!!
I went to Milan on Tuesday and it was the most beautiful city ever!! The Duomo (Cathedral) is huge, and you could see that Duomo 100 times and still not see all the details that have been put into it!! The Italians say that there is always construction going on at the Cathedral because as soon as they finish fixing one side they have to go to another, then another, and then back to the first one they fixed.
This Sunday I am going to Geneva with the family I am staying with. Which is a small village in the mountains. That is exciting as they are like my tour guides as they know so much about Italy as it is their home country. Pictures to follow.
So far I ahve eaten pasta every night i have been here and am loving it!!! I could carry on eating pasta and never get bored of it!!
It is really a great opportunity to be here, but I miss home lots and lots!!
As they say... There is no place like home!!
