Liguria Travel Blogs

Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Italia!

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre
We arrived in Torino at night, and checked into our 4 star hotel. Every hotel in Europe gets a star rating. We’ve stayed in many decent one and two star hotels, once in a while a three star, but this was our first, and to date only, 4 star hotel (we got a great deal on the internet). It was nice, but nothing to write home about it. Wait, I am writing home about it! Ha ha! Anyway, the next day we toured Torino, also known as Turin in English. We went to the old town and walked around the square [View Full Entry]

One of the villages

"Clear as the deep, blue sea...." There's no other way to go about it other than jumping right in....literally. The water I jumped into this past weekend was so blue, so deep and yet so clear I couldn't believe it. I'll rewind a bit. Joined by my friends Erica, Patricia, Sarah and Katie (you'll be hearing their names quite a bit), I ventured into Cinque Terre. Just about everybody from our program had already gone and talked about it, so safe to say our expectations were quite high -- we weren't let down. It was about a 2.5 hour trip to [View Full Entry]

This is the beautiful village where we spent 8 days with Jennie, Martin, Elliot & Luke. Luke is presently living there.
Finally we are staying put in McKinney for a couple of weeks. Our trip to Indiana for most of August was wonderful. We enjoyed spending time with Regina (Terry's mom), Dolan and Mary Louise (Susan's parents). We especially loved being there for Dolan's 90th birthday. Dolan taught his dog, Tinker, to bark out "I Love You" and so his children - 6 of them - barked out I Love You to Dolan on his 90th. He threw us triskets for treats! Jennie, Martin & Elliot, along with Amanda & Hans Henry, spent a week at Lake James with us. We also [View Full Entry]

After a comical breakfast with Roberto as entertainment we headed off back to Florence to catch a train to Monterosso on the Ligure Coast or the Italian Riviera. Monterosso is part of Cinque Terre (5 towns)…but more about that later we have to get there first! As we have our rail passes we travelled free and the first leg would start in around 45 mins which was great timing. Throughout Europe they have this funny system where they only allocate the platform a few minutes before the train is due to leave! The huge notice boards are very popular place to [View Full Entry]

Monterosso Day 2

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre
Sleep…hmm well I’m sure I did but seemed that I was awake more often than sleeping. Although we are off the main drag, (what I mean by that is we re back of the narrow lane that serves as the main street here, it is classed as “the old part” so everything seems tiny) it is still really noisy. Between the church bells and some other bell something goes off every half an hour, trains, lost tourists, locals that stagger home drunk and have a discussion in the laneway under our window, dogs, cats, stereo’s, tv’s, babies crying and all sorts [View Full Entry]

Monterosso Day 3

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre
Had a fair sleep armed with my ipod. Still heard a fair amount of noise but didn’t wake as much which was great! We realised last night that we couldn’t do the trek today as we had to post our stuff off…(10kgs worth!) and the post office is only open 9-1pm on Saturdays. The postie guy wanted to jump in our box and go to OZ he told us! We also had some of our clothes washed. So the trek is tomorrow now. We paid the guy for our apartment, did the post and then headed for the beach for the [View Full Entry]

Cinque Terre

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre
Caught the train from Milan to Levanto (seems to be a few Aussies doing the same thing) On the way from our train to our hotel we found our travelling companions John and Louise having lunch in a bar opposite our hotel, so we dropped our bags and joined them. We explored the town in the afternoon and had dinner in a local restaurant. Dot fell in love with Levanto! Next morning we stocked up on supplies for our lunch and hit the trail. Up it went! The higher we climbed the more spectaluar the views. the cameras were running hot. [View Full Entry]

Vernazza to Riomaggiore was a bigger day than before. It is a twisty but wonderful path thru Corniglia and Manarola. It was pretty easy, but the closer we got to Riomaggiore the more day trippers we encountered. By the time we took our first steps on the Via della Amore it was like peak hour in Pitt Street. We hit Rio & headed straight for our hhotel. We walked up the hill to the very top of town, where our hotel, the only hotel in town, is located, and had a cool shower. Redressed in clean clothes we headed for our [View Full Entry]

After leaving Florence and the Tuscany region, our plan was to make our way slowly to our next 'base camp' in La Spezia on the west coast of Italy, spending the day stopping and taking in the sites of Lucca and Pisa. But by now on our trip, we were pretty much over seeing another town and the buildings it had to offer. We were day dreaming of the beach!!! The weather was warm and all we wanted to do was kick back at the beach and not do too much of anything. So with that we decided to forgo the [View Full Entry]
