So this week was actually a very eventful week…
Saturday afternoon, we played soccer with some of the students from St. John’s University. St. John’s is a school in New York, and they have a graduate program here in Rome. I don’t know the first thing about soccer, other than kick the ball and don’t touch it with your hands, so I just watched the twelve year old guys that our group plus the St. John’s students played against teach them a few lessons.
That night, we went out to dinner with the humanities students again, because it was Cassie’s birthday. This time turned out a lot better than the night I had my crème brulee incident.
Sunday morning, Brandi and I woke up relatively early and took Rachel to the giant flea market at Porta Portese. If found some cute shoes, a nice set of sheets, and added to my scarf collection. I wasn’t quite as overwhelmed this time as the first time we went…and we didn’t get lost either.
There was a city-wide bomb drill Monday morning. There is a main road (Corso Victor Emanuel II) that runs right in front of the building our
school is in, so one of the bomb drills was taking place right outside (there was also one at the Coliseum and one towards the Vatican). It was useless to have class that morning though, because we all just wanted to watch, and there were a lot of sirens going off. It’s a little reassuring, though, to know that if there is ever an emergency, at least they have practiced, although I still imagine it would be a little chaotic.
Tuesday morning, there was a train strike going on. Strikes aren’t really what I had imagined them to be. I thought it was just kind of like “Hey, I’m not going to work anymore”, kind of a spur-of-the-moment type thing, but no, they’re really well organized. In fact, we learned later this week that there was going to be another strike that weekend. Anyway, Emilio was trying to take us to a museum for class, and we made it to the Termini (which is the central metro station in Rome) but that’s as far as we could go. So we got out of class really early.
Wednesday was get stuff done day. We were having studio critiques on
Night photo from Gianicolo Hill
Some things just can't be captured with the camera...but i tried. Thursday, so we had been working really hard all week on finishing our projects, but we needed to be done Wednesday night. And I’m happy to say that I had all the requirements.
On the way home, that night, Brent, Brandi, and I decided to hike up the “hill” behind our neighborhood. This is the hill that we had randomly walked up before, called the Gianicolo Hill. We had noticed a building at the top that was brightly illuminated (because I learned my freshman year that you should never refer to a building as being “lit”), and we wanted to find out what it was. The building was actually a fountain, called Fontana dell’Acqua Paola and created for Pope Paul V.
Ironically, Thursday, for Architecture of the City, we hiked back up the Gianicolo Hill. Davide took us to see the Tempietto at San Pietro de Montorio, and Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is at the bottom of the hill, relatively close to our apartment.
The Tempietto, designed by Bramante, was built by the King and Queen of Spain, on the spot where, at one point in time, it was believed that Saint Peter was crucified (which

Nathan, trying to be the goalie...hey, at least he's trying, unlike me, sitting taking pictures... is now known to be closer to the Vatican).
Our studio reviews went relatively well later that day. There’s still work to be done, as is with all of our projects, but the points that the professors bring up are always helpful.
I cooked fried chicken and potato salad for me and the guys, to celebrate good critiques.
Friday was a very lazy, rainy day. Since we usually had class trips on Friday, but nothing was planned for this weekend, I went around the whole day thinking it was Saturday. Now I’m all confused on my days. I guess the only thing that we did that was really eventful that day was that Cassie and Megan cooked dinner for us…which was delicious!
It was still raining Saturday, so it was another lazy day. It stopped raining that night, so Brent, Nathan, and I searched for the English movie theater…which we didn’t find. We watched soccer at the apartment instead.
The sun is finally out today!
