We finally made it to Capri, an island off the Amalfi Coast which we had been looking forward to returning to for many years.
Tomorrow we will hire a small boat and explore the island from the water, and it's many caves (grotto's) - blue, white and green, named for the colour of the water (blue & green) or the rock (white one). I think the green or white grotto we can swim into, but the blue grotto has a tiny cave entry and every has to anchor and climb into small boats with experienced guides. They time the entry with the tide/swell receding and everyone lays back on top of each other in order to get through the small gap. Of course you have to tip extra if you want them to sing while in the grotto - like the gondoliers in Venice! ' That's Amore!'
I had forgotten the amount of shopping on Capri! OMG, if I thought Venice had jewellery, I was mistaken, if you had a million dollars to spend I don't know how you would pick from all the incredible peices, though I think you would have to be a movie star to have
anywhere to wear them.
It is just lane after lane of jewellers and high fashion labels. We have had a few laughs - one man was looking at watches and the sales assistant was explaining that as they were platinum, one was $80,000 and the other $87,000 Euro - which is over $100,000 AUD!!! No prices are showing, so it daunting to guess the prices. One large pendant with a pale lemon square set stone we could see the price tag through the stone - $865,000!!!!! Leisa, you will be surprised that most are left in the windows at night. They must not have any break ins, as even in our shopping centres, most valuables go into the safes at night.
We have found one or two shops with costume jewellery - but that is about all. Beautiful ceramic peices though, we have seen here and at Sorrento, and if only I could fit more in my suitcase I would be very tempted by a range of hurricane lamps with ceramic shells and starfish around the base.
Leah had asked me about the fashion, but to be honest in the tourist areas it seems all very high
end fashion (Chanel, Salvatore Ferragamo, Fendi, Prada, etc) or very cheap market type stores, there just hasn't been any in between nice but affordable stores. I have to say, I have not braved walking into many of these shops, in my 3/4 pants and joggers, one feels a little self conscious. We went into Mui Mui today, a part of the Prada group and John said they were looking us up and down, but you know what - who cares, they are sales assistants & without staff discount probably can't afford to shop there either!
There was leather of course around Florence and some in Sorrento, but to be honest I don't know why Florence is known for it's leather, as we have not seen a cow in nearly 5 weeks of travelling! We passed through lots of farming land over the past two weeks and only saw one paddock with some sheep and that is all in the way of animals. Salerno, near where we were at Sorrento is known for it's Water Buffalo, and many shops promote the local Buffalo Mozzarella, but we have seen very few animals, even in country areas.
Anyway will have more
to tell tomorrow after our touring of the island and caves.
Weather is glorious and can't believe we only have about 5 nights left! : (
