Busy day of sightseeing beginning by
trying to get onto the Docklands Tour route of our Hop-on Hop-off bus. But even though the driver was leaving a little early, she would not break their rule of not opening the bus for new passengers after the door has been closed. VERY frustrating! So we took the same tour route as yesterday and got off at St. Stephen's Green and wandered around this beautiful park for a while. Very reminiscent of Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC.
After this we crossed the street to the Shelbourne Hotel to view the room where the Constitution was signed (beautiful hotel and very interesting history). We walked over to Trinity Street and had a scone for lunch at Keoghs (yet another brilliant recommendation from Sinead and a neat place and great food) and sat outside and people-watched while we had our "lunch".
Hiked several blocks from here to
try to catch the Docklands Tour bus again and we missed it by one minute! So we wandered the area for half an hour to catch the next one, only to have it stop at the beginning of the route a few minutes later and tell
us to get out and get on their other bus. We got out and watched the other bus drive away!
SO WE WAITED HALF AN HOUR YET AGAIN to catch the docklands bus because this is the only bus that stops by the train station we want to go to. So off we finally go on the Docklands Tour only to have the driver go right on by our stop and take us back to the beginning of the line AGAIN! So back onto the original tour bus AGAIN to take us at least part of the way to the train station then a little hike and after trying to get here ALL DAY we finally get onto a DART train to head south down the coastline.
The train system here is great and for a 15 Euro family ticket, we can hop on and off the train all day (or at least as much of the day that we have left). A nice half hour ride brought us to Bray, a beautiful, quaint seaside town that happened to have a fair on all along the shoreline. Nice Oceanside walk then back onto the train to backtrack a little
to the town of Dalkey. A very beautiful, quaint but touristy town along the ocean where the singers Bono (from U2) and Enya both happen to live (Bono in a mansion -glimpsed his terrace as the train went by- and Enya in a castle that nobody admitted knowing where it was). But we did stop in at Finnigans where reportedly Bono likes to drop by for a pint and apparently Barack Obama did once too). Had supper at the Magpie; good service, food and reasonable prices but strangely out of place dance club music and not the most comfortable seating.
Finally back to our room around 9:00PM after many, many bus and train rides today. We've really enjoyed Dublin but we're off to Belfast by train tomorrow. It would be nice to come back to Dublin some day to explore more of the surrounding area and to visit Damien and Sinead again.
