I started later than usual this year - felt very odd being in town for Canada Day and music festivals...
The departure was a little dicey yesterday - remnants of storms in Western Canada delayed my first flight, but I had such a long layover it didn't matter. The flight from St. John's to Dublin damn near gave me a heart attack - we dropped or did something and the pressure went down. I felt like I was getting sucked down a drain. Very unpleasant. Needless to say, as per usual I didn't sleep on the plane. I did, however, manage to sleep most of the bus ride from Dublin to Cork. It was raining (shocker!), so I don't think I missed much. I was awake long enough passing through Dublin to see this giant creepy puppet head staring out the window. Ah, my people.
I dropped my bag off at the hostel and did what I do best - I roamed. There's just something about being dropped into the middle of a city and just aimlessly exploring the nooks and crannies. Cork's kind of perfect for it - there are a few waterways so if you're ever lost,
easy to find yourself. I found a few churches, a giant market (tripes and onions were sold out for the day... I legit wanted to try that!), some parks and street art galore. Cork has a hearty feel to it - it's a little run down, some places more obviously so than others, but the buildings have these pops of colour that try ever so hard to ward off the grey clouds and roads.
Another odd thing I happened upon was the Cork Butter Museum. Yeah. About as exciting as you could expect from a butter museum.
I amade some bird friends, as per usual. It's good to see that hasn't changed. And another thing that hasn't changed is the desire for drunk old men to talk to me. Not in a harassing way... just a 'let's sing this song together' way... or a 'let's try and not fall down the stairs way while I tell you my life story' way. Ah yes, some things never change.
Tesco and Poundland also haven't changed - to my delight. I picked up some of my regular goodies and meandered my way back to the hostel.
The people in
my room are super friendly. There's a fellow Canuck from NB and a Taiwanese teacher - lots of great discussion to be had as we unpacked our things and got organized. I love talking about different education systems - very interesting to see what's common across countries and what's not.
I was starving at supper time - didn't have much really since leaving home. I went to this fish n' chips place down the road (The Fish Wife) and holy shit... tied for best fish n' chips I've ever had and hands down the best mushy peas I've ever had. There was so much I have my dinner for tomorrow as well.
And that's that... pretty short today as I'm ready to fall asleep.
