The ChurchThe ChurchThe Church

The structure was so impressively huge!
While in Reykjavik, we explored this hip artistic Capitol. I created a list of the places we went:

Hallgrimskirkja (Church)
Lebowski Bar
Kafinn (Coffee house)
Kex (Hostel)
Sandholt (Bakery)
Volcano House
Art Museum
Bravo (Happy hour)
Reyjkavik Chips (French fry place)

I must say at the church, I was most impressed with the extensive organ system. Awed by it, actually. At Lebowski Bar we ordered fries and milkshakes - delicious. Kafinn, an adorable basement coffee house, made delicious cappuccinos. Kex was the hostel we stayed at. This place was unbelievably hip inside. From the outside, it is so inconspicuous. One would never know what lied inside! Sanholt was my favorite bakery, their chocolate croissants are the most flaky and buttery I've yet tasted. The second day, I ordered two. Volcano House showed nearly an hour long film recounting recent volcanic eruptions and the effects on the country. It was quite interesting and informative. The Art Museum was partially closed, however, the exhibits that were open were most interesting. The art work was very eccentric, wild, hard to comprehend pieces. I almost felt as though I was walking through a looney bin. One exhibit, explaining about freeing oneself, was a

completely white room with black sheep cutouts hanging from the ceiling accompanied by a strange wooden fenced cube and green workout yoga balls underneath of the wooden cube. We stopped at a place called Bravo because of an advertised happy hour. A happy hour beer, I was surprised to see was only 800 Kr. That's nearly 6 USD for happy hour! The final stop on my list was a neat little find off of the main drag called Reykjavik Chips. This place only served French fries, but they came drizzled with whatever of about 10 different sauces of your choosing. I chose garlic! It was quite delicious. Served in a cone shaped container, there were precut holes in each table to hold the fries, and they were served with a skewer stick to be used as a utensil. The total time we spent in this city was nearly two full days, plenty of time to see everything we had on our list. I was thankful to end this amazing journey with a relaxing, slower-paced, two days.

A map depicting the volcanic belt, where the two tetonic plates separate at a rate of 3 mm a year. The moving plates creates for the increased volcanic pressure and activity. About every 5 years a volcano erupts in Iceland. I think this year might be the year for the next. The last eruption was in 2011.

Our last night was spent sitting in the hostel lobby, drinking, reading and eating delicious fish.
