Nothing much to do today. The van has to be back at 3pm and the place we’re staying is not that scenic.
We have a late get up. It’s apparent that this campsite is the one most people are using for their final night before a flight home as it’s only eight minutes drive to Kefvalik airport and all the car and van rental places are nearby. Suitcases are strewn all over the grass and people are madly cleaning the interiors if their vans.
I go for a shower. I’m first in the queue but forty minutes later I’m still first in the queue. What IS that woman doing in there? Ian suggests I use the mens. He has seen a couple emerging from it whilst he was having a wash. As there is no one in there I decide it’s the best option.
It’s dry today although the wind is chilly.
We take the camper to fill it up with fuel (it’s a full to full policy here). People are furiously cleaning their cars and vans. Fortunately we don’t have to worry as the rental people told us they prefer to clean the vans themselves. Gritty
roads mean that paint might get damaged with brushes so you have to be careful.
Now what? We return to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsular where we started off on day one. It looks considerably nicer in the sunshine than it did in the rain and gales.
Now we return to the campsite for a huge fry up. The dining area is semi open and the wind is rattling though it. We don’t want to cook in the camper as I’ve just finished cleaning it.
I notice there’s a man picking through the rubbish bins. He finds half a bottle of alcohol and goes off very happy. Then I see him on the kids playground doing a celebratory workout. There’s actually very rich pickings here without resorting to the bins as there is a table to leave unwanted items on…it is heaving!
Everything is packed so we return to the rental place. All our unused food (there’s quite a lot of it) is put on the communal ‘help yourself’ shelves and fridge. It’s a great system - help yourself at the beginning and donate back at the end. I think there will be
some very happy campers tomorrow as the shelves are bursting by the time we have crammed on all our stuff. Cooking didn’t turn out quite the way we expected here so a lot of our ingredients were surplus to requirements.
Back at the hotel, we have been allocated a very nice room with a sea view. The beds are very comfortable. Though it feels pretty hot in here after all that fresh air we’ve been having.
We decide to go out for a walk along the sea front. We were not expecting much as we thought we had seen most of Kefvalik on the day we arrived. Not so it would seem! We find a number of steel sculptures, but also we discover the Giantess Cave. It didn’t look much from afar but in fact it’s rather fun. The cave turns out to be much larger than expected with cleverly designed doorways and furniture that make us feel small. Inside, the giantess is laughing out loud and there are also loud belching and farting sounds echoing around the interior. The kids (big and small) are loving it. :-)
A stroll back via the high street and we
are back to our hotel. A lovely end to a great trip. More thoughts tomorrow as we journey home…
