Around Snæfellsnes

The day in which we drove around Snæfellsnes peninsular

Up early for porridge and to pack up the car. We had discovered yesterday that the boot lock is a bit temperamental and takes a fair bit of slamming to shut which we felt rather guilty for doing on a quiet Sunday morning! We also discovered Chavaunnes spare water bottle which she'd left in the car now had a mangled lid. I later found a chewed muffin paper case so we must have had a mouse in the car overnight which liked chocolate muffins and water! We then headed to Helgafell where we climbed without looking back to get our three wishes – sadly 2 of mine didn’t come true. We couldn’t pay for the privilege of climbing the hill though as the booth was closed in spite of it being after opening time. Vicky drove us today and enjoyed herself on all the gravel roads. We also saw, well heard then saw, eider ducks on lake at a lovely view point. We stopped at Sharđsvik beach then went on to Öndverđarnes point which involved a very, very bumpy track! At the point we visited a well that supposedly contains fresh water, holy water & ale – didn’t fancy trying it though! We also found what we believe to be artic fox poo, mostly because we ruled out any other Icelandic mammal! We then took the gravelly 574 around the peninsular to Snæfellsjökull National Park to do the Hellnar to Arnastapi coastal trail. We saw lots of funky larval rock formations, a dragon lair, rock dragons, a troll, basalt columns, caves and a sea arch, plus dolphins (harbour porpoises?) & a seal eating a fish! Sadly Chavaunne lost her lens cap.

We stopped briefly at Bjarnarfoss to admire the waterfall before taking route 54 over the mountains to our next home at Borg horse farm next to Kirkjufell where we had tasty veg & pasta in tomato sauce. Not the best sleeping arrangements though and I drew the short straw of sleeping in the side of the double bed nearest the wall so I either had to climb over Vix or squeeze my bum through the tiny gap at the end of the bed to get out!
