Hilly Buda to the west of the Danube and flat Pest to the east developed as separate entities over the last 1000 years and were not united as a single city until 1873. During all that time the city has seen numerous invasions by various countries resulting in the settlements being destroyed or badly damaged, the last being when the advancing Russians besieged the German army between December 1944 and February 1945.
Today we visited Pest and among the buildings we saw were St Stephen’s Bascilica built between 1851 and 1905, The National Bank built in a period of prosperity in the early 20th Century and the Parliament Building, the construction of which started in 1885.
