Day 1:
I landed in Santorini early in the morning flying in from Athens. Finally to the land of picture perfect whitewashed houses. For the first night we stayed at a canvas tent in one of the campsites. The campsite had a nice pool which was perfect for hot afternoon. After settling in to the campsite, it was off to the pool and taste some (touristy) Greek cuisine. Afternoon was reserved for a hike from Fira to Oia. It is a well travelled hiking path which is suppose to end at village of Oia at sunset. So that was the plan. We started off from the town of Fira. The hike starts next to a long line which was for a cable car that goes down to the beach. It was interesting walking past the line, some people wondered if we are cutting the line, and others wondered where are we going! Once past the line, the hike hits fancy restaurants with great view of the Santorini crater bowl. It was my first view of the crater and it takes a while to realise that you are looking at a really large crater filled with ocean water. There were also
few big ocean liners here. This side of the island was clearly the luxury side that I had heard about.
The hike as advertised hugs the side of hill with great view of ocean and little towns. Once passed the restaurants in town of Fira, the hike hits the next town. It is well paved at this point. There are nice spots on the way where you can take shade from the sun and enjoy the view. We had our lunch packed, but otherwise there are also many place where you can eat with a view. This is the the sunny side, so it was HOT. After crossing a couple of towns the way becomes dirt track with finally some solitude. Due to heat we were really exhausted even though the hike was not very difficult. Soon you reach the highest point from where the town of Oia is finally visible. You can clearly see that it is one of those picture perfect towns at end of island. We met a woman from Switzerland at this point, what a coincidence. She has been coming to Greece a lot and loved this hike.
After resting a bit at this
point, we started walking towards Oia. Once off the hill the beautiful buildings of Oia start showing up. The luxurious whitewashed villas with their very blue pools. We wondered how it would feel to stay in one of these places of a week - the conclusion was we will be bored out of our minds 😊 There were also a large number of weddings at this place. Seemed like a perfect place for pictures for photo album. We sat at a point for an hour or so. This seemed like great place to watch the sunset. But sunset was still hours away, so we decided to walk down into the town. The walk took longer than expected, and we were at risk of missing the sunset. There was no good place to watch it from the town, most were 'taken'. So we ran around to the bus station, and then walked to the edge to see sunset. It was good, though the higher point would have been better if only we had the patience. After sunset we took the first bus back to Fira. We were really hungry by that time. Once in town we just ducked into the first
cafe for dinner. It turned out to be quite good. Tomorrow will be another adventure on other side of island.
