beachAthens' homemade version of Dubai's World Islands, j/k, lol! probably just a mass of dead weeds and seascum
Well, I think it's safe to say that this and my last birthday do have something in common: they both involved confusing the hell and beating the crap out of my body.
lol...I do admit I'm prone to exaggeration, but seriously...I'm starting to worry that I'm beginning to develop a taste for pushing my body to the limit when the clock strikes 15:38 :P
Last year it was this spur-of-the-moment 20+ hour drive through Oklahoma, a crack-y attempt to return to my roots, to reacquaint myself with the part of me I thought I had left behind (why does everything seem so much bigger when you're younger? Go figure :D).
haha...let's just say that I didn't get a wink o' sleep during that long drive through the desolate landscape that Oklahoma and Texas share (well, I would I hope I didn't...don't think sleeping and driving mix :P), and that Oklahoma is surprisingly frighteningly cold in early April (again, go figure :P), so sleep was hard to come by.
This year, much to my chagrin, I found myself in nearly the same position I was in exactly one year ago. Last year, I was shivering under my coat,
Omonia Squareat the crack of dawn. Literally. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I weren't using up all my resources AVOIDING dropping dead >.<
cramped as you can be in the backseat of your car. This year, I was shivering in my coat, cramped as you can be sleeping across two lounge chairs made for midgets on a night ferry.
In booking our ferry tickets from Santorini back to Athens, my mom and I got bitten by some misplaced adventure bug (we were probably still high from our mule ride up the mountain :D) and decided to sacrifice a night's worth of sleep by taking the midnight ferry back to the mainland.
I could only remember thinking that my body was sooo going to hate me in the morning.
And it kinda did, but I think it sucked it up because I think it'd already given up after my frozen stint in Macedonia and figured 'why bother?', lol.
We checked into our hotel when people were supposed to be rising (7am-ish), and I think my zombie-like countenance frightened the receptionist just a tad, so he made no argument on the policy on check-in times (lol). It was awesome, surely.
I had never been so glad to see a bed in my entire life.
Ahh...the rest of the day
the white arches!...of the New Olympic Stadium, to rival the Golden Arches of McDonald's! Who will prevail???
was spent at the New Olympic Stadium (which housed the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens), where we spent gawking at vacant tennis courts, closed-off indoor halls, the main stadium, and the velodrome (whatever the hell that is, lol).
omg. I couldn't believe that I was standing in the general vicinity where Misty May and Kerri Walsh won their first Olympic gold medal in beach volleyball (well, actually they probably played in a court miles outside Athens, but let's ignore that little detail now :P). I think my mother was quite alarmed when I started tearing up (lol).
Then it was off to Kifissia, the posher, northern side of Athens that tourists rarely visit, and then an hour-long tram ride to the beach some kilometers south of Athens. OH! And I had a gyro. FINALLY. lol, after 2 weeks in Greece, it wasn't until my final day here that I got to try one. Muy delish! But I nearly choked on it when I saw a slim 'n trim Seth Rogin promoting his new movie on MTV. Wtf, mate? ^^
the velodrome!don't know exactly what conspired here, but it sure is purty
random palm trees!thrown in there to confuse those who have no idea where I'm supposed to be!
metro artlol...it was amusing only because my mom actually took time to squint the words out..."eat shit...?" hahahaha
the tramI think this might be the first time I've taken the tram, but not too sure...
