Restaurant The Greeks
The restaurant where we ate our last meal on Santorini. Excellent plate. After packing and leaving our luggage in the office, we walked up to Fira for our last chance to shop and see the view. We ate lunch at Restaurant The Greeks, having a Santorini Special Plate consisting of mashed fava beans, feta cheese, fried tomato balls, potato omelet, and a tomato and cheese spread. It was getting close to our 2:30pm trip to the new port to catch our catamarn to Crete, so we headed back to the hotel to wait. Again, Villa Manos was a great place to stay...very clean, friendly staff, and a great price. The ride down to the new port was ok, except for a very crowded van. We arrived at 3pm for our 5:45pm trip to Crete, so we had drinks in a cafe, then sat in the departure building and waited. Originally, the crowds were ridiculous, mostly waiting for the Blue Star Naxos ferry to Athens (the same ferry we'd arrived on), but after it left we were pretty much alone until about 5pm when people started arriving for the Super Jet and Flying Cat to Crete. Our Flying Cat was supposed to leave first, but the Super Jet beat it into port by a

The apartments where we are staying in Kalives, near Chania, Crete. few minutes, so we had to wait. Eventhough we left after it, we caught the Super Jet just as Crete came into view. The trip was quick and comfortable, with airplane type seats assigned, a small cafeteria, and restrooms. Arriving in Iraklio, we found the bus station, close to the port and bought tickets to Hania (or Chania, or Xania) at 19 Euros each, roundtrip. Hania is about 140 kms from Iraklio. I tried twice to call our hotel, Aporokos Hotel & Apartments in Kalives (a small beach village near Chania), but got cut off and had to board the last bus at 9pm. We were supposed to call and let them know so they could meet us at the bus stop on the main highway near Kalives. I was wondering how we'd find the place that late at night, when the bus driver called for "Petty Manoli". Apparently, the lady at Apokoros figured it was us and called the bus station. Manoli told her we were on the 9pm bus and she said they'd be there waiting. Pheew! After a two hour bus ride, we got off at Kalives and found the owner, Mr. Tountas waiting with his car.
Coffee, Crete Style
The filter coffee I had at Taverna Akrogiali. I had to push down the handle to filter the coffee thru the hot water. It was quite good! He drove us to the apartments and his daughter checked us in and asked us to come see her in the morning. They were very nice, especially at 11pm, and the apartment is great! Two bedrooms (we only use the one with the double bed), private bath, kitchen/living room, and a balcony overlooking the beach and ocean just one building away. We went for a short stroll along the beach, bought a Fanta, and went back to the apartment to sleep. The bed was a bit small for two, as were the sheets and blankets. A bit cool here still...at night. Pictures forthcoming.
