We arrived in Santorini and immediately fell in love with it. The bleach white buildings with the sky blue domes are something that I thought only existed in postcards, and not something that I would ever see.
We landed at the airport and upon arrival, realised that our transfer bus was not there and didn’t look like it was coming. Luckily, there was a man named Alex who knew about this and he took us and some other tourists in place of the transfer. €20 and half an hour later, we arrived at our hotel in Perissa Beach, on the south side of Santorini. Perissa is famous for its black beach which is unlike anything you have ever seen. We settled in to our hotel which was a vast improvement from Crete. Although all that was needed for that was clean sheets! By the time we had settled in, it was nearly dinner time. So with that, we headed down to the waterfront and found a café for a good feed. After a long day of travelling, we made our way back to the hotel and watched some TV before bed.
We woke up the next morning and it was
blowing a gale so this put a dampener on our plans for a day at the beach. We did Skype with my family before having breakfast and getting ready to go out for the day. We caught a bus from the bottom of our street that would take us into the main city of Santorini, Thira. We had some traditional Greek gyro pita’s which are the same as kebabs really and looked around some shops. We bought a few souvenirs before heading back to Perissa at 2:30pm. We got back to the hotel and had a nap before heading out to dinner at around 6:30pm. We went out to a place called the magic bus café and got way too much food, so we ended up taking it back to the hotel for later. After dinner we watched a little TV and then headed to bed, hoping the weather would be more beach suitable in the morning.
Monday arrived and our beach wishes had been granted. Perfect weather! We headed back down to the water and got a full English breakfast which was a welcome change from the onslaught of pastries we had been eating for breakfast. Afterwards we
hired a few chairs in the sun and spent the rest of the day sunbaking and swimming. We had lunch and then headed back to our chairs for more time in the sun before finally deciding to go back to the hotel at 5:30pm. That night we were too tired to go out so we just heated up the leftovers from the previous night and went to bed.
The next day we had to do some washing as we were down to our last clothes! So after a rushed breakfast, we caught the bus back into Thira and found a local Laundromat. After dropping off 3 loads of washing, we made our way back into the city centre and had a look at the sights. We checked out a few more tourist shops that we hadn’t seen before. We looked over the railing and saw about 20 donkeys waiting to take people for a ride up or down the cliff face that Santorini so precariously clings to. Afterwards, we collected our washing and headed back to our neck of the woods and back to the beach. After a late afternoon swim, we had some dinner at a different restaurant
called Aquarius before heading back to the hotel. We then spent a bit of time on the internet before heading for bed.
Our last full day arrived in Santorini and we weren’t amused about this. We were beginning to wish we could stay forever on the island! We had another English brekky for ….well BREKKY, before heading back to the hotel to make the most of our last day. We had organised to do a wine tasting, so we caught the Thira bus but got off at a bakery which was not far from the winery. These were the words of the bus worker. Not reality. In reality we had to walk for about 20 minutes on a main road before finding the much awaited Boutari Winery! We walked in and met the charming and friendly winery man, who was really helpful. We also met a bunch of poms at the winery and had a few wine tastings with them. We tried about 6 white wines, 1 red and a dessert wine. I wasn’t too fussed about the dessert wine but the whites were really good. After getting a little tipsy from so much wine, we bought a bottle
of white and headed back to the bus stop. Once we got there it was so hot, we decided just walk the rest of the way back to Perissa. Unfortunately we underestimated how long the walk was. 1 hour and 6km later we arrived in Perissa and thought it was time for more drinks. So with that we found a little cocktail bar and had a few more drinks and a bite to eat. After a while, we headed back to our hotel before getting some food down the road for dinner. We then got some cash to pay our hotel and settled into bed after a long alcohol fuelled day!
Our last day arrived, and reluctantly, we got into our transfer bus and headed to the port. We collected our tickets and waited in line before boarding our ferry for our next destination, Naxos!
