We arrived Chios around 4:30am. We drove off the boat and were soon informed that the next boat leaving for Turkey would not leave at 8am as scheduled but at 4pm. They told us the boat was “broken”. We made the best of it and spent the day exploring the town. We finally loaded the car around 3:30 then watched as the one other car squeezed on board this tiny little ferry. About 45min. later we arrived in Cesme, Turkey. We got off the boat and were directed straight to the customs office. This, by the way, is the first time we have gone through customs since we left France. We all got our visas with no problems but were told we would have to wait until morning and purchase Turkish insurance in order to get ... read more

There are many Cretans living in Chios and they have a radio program each week playing Cretan music. Rena's friend works at the station and organized a party to celebrate their 300th programming. Lucky for me, we got invited to the party. I got a little taste of Cretan dancing. Funny is really looks like River Dance. The dance is all leg work and no upper body movement. My friends made fun of me because I was moving my upper body and they told me I dance like a loose girl. Well, few years of Salsa dancing will do that to you. I can't help moving my hips. Christina had suggested that I go to Greece around this time because there were several festivals. I was pleasantly surprised to see people walking around in costumes, and ... read more

The size of Chios is comparable to the island of Montreal. Though we can probably cross the widest area of Montreal in about 3 hours, on Chios, it is a totally different story. The island is mountainous and most of the sites on Chios are on different altitude, thus it is harder to estimate the time from one site to another. We spend an entire day driving around and only covered a small portion of the island. Actually, probably just ten percent of the island. From sea level up to the mountains, the trip was quite an adventure in itself. The winding roads all around the mountains can prove to be quite daunting. Actually, I don't think I'd be able to drive on those narrow roads with nothing to stop you from going off the road ... read more

After buying groceries for the next three days, as Sunday all stores are closed everywhere in Greece and Monday being a holiday, we spent the day at Mirmingi village, home village to Christina. It is a small village with about fifty inhabitants, all of whom are over 30 years of age. Most young people have moved out into the cities and only return during holidays. Though there are bigger villages around Chios, Mirmingi has a simple charm. Quiet, quaint, the village is unassuming and is reminiscent of a simpler life before the craziness of modernity. Walking around the winding paths that billow up and down the slopes of Mirmingi, I felt a sense of ease and peace. Being away from the hectic rat race of the city, breathing fresh air, seeing all that green foliage, one ... read more

With the flight cancellation and delays, I was 2 days off schedule. Fortunately, the ferry to Chios was at 4pm, so I could sleep in and recover from the crazy two days of travel. I didn't do much in Athens, we took it slow on Friday morning. Christina's car needed repair, so we took her car to the Suzuki garage and left it there. Funny thing is, the day I arrived in Greece is the day the electric company union decided to go on strike, because all quotes were on the computer the garage could not give us a quote for the repairs. So we left the car there. Actually, taking the elevator up to Christina's apartment was not an option, the electric company would turn off and on the power without notice and the last ... read more

It's amazing what a difference a 45 minute boat ride can make! I left Tuesday night for the closest Grecian island to Cesme, which is called Chios. Each time I asked for a map or a guidebook, people could only offer me vague maps of the entire island, so I was really curious what this small town and island might behold! Honestly, I've always wanted to do a Grecian island cruise of some sort, so thought it was a good opportunity to catch a glimpse of one, if only for a few nights! When I arrived, i was cracking up - here I am again in another country with another currency (back to Euros!) and a completely crazy foreign language! I mean, across Europe, you can usually deduct most signs, or at least read them!!! But ... read more
