Tuesday 25th September:
As the weather forecast for the rest of the week was not looking good, high winds and rain, we decided to make the most of the good weather and go for a walk to the church of Timios Stavros at the top of the mountain overlooking Damnoni Beach. Since our last visit in May the track leading to the start point of the walk, halfway up the mountain, had been resurfaced and was now a very good quality country road. Also, the track heading up the mountain had been graded which made walking much easier and it took us just under an hour to reach the little church at the summit. Although the countryside was a lot drier than it had been in May the views were still very
First select a mountain
We'll take the one on the left: with a little church on top spectacular. We didn't stay very long at the summit and the downhill walk back to the car took us only 45 minutes: then it was off to our favourite restaurant next to the beach at Damnoni for a well earned drink followed by a leisurely lunch. Although we had brought our swimming gear with us we decided not to go for a swim as the wind had picked up and the sand on the beach was beginning to fly around. So we returned to Plakias where the wind seemed even stronger with nobody on the beach and with all the beach umbrellas furled and out of use. Jane bravely went for a swim in the pool at our apartment block while I had a snooze in our apartment. We didn't go out for dinner in the evening as we had bought a takeaway meal, green beans in a rich tomato sauce and lasagne, from the Mesogeios restaurant in Damnoni, which was delicious.
Wednesday 26th September:
A windy start to the day with a strong north wind, fortunately not cold, sweeping down over the mountains behind Plakias. We took a walk into the town occasionally getting buffeted by some
really strong gusts of wind. A curious side effect of the wind was that it was whipping up mini waterspouts in Plakias Bay which streamed eastwards across the Bay before disappearing. I think that the steep mountains on the three sides of Plakias Bay may be responsible for this turbulence as they probably have the same effect as the downdrafts caused by skyscrapers which create very strong gusts at street level. Outside the Bay the sea was very rough and we saw a large trawler sail into the Bay and anchor; presumably taking shelter from the more severe storm conditions out at sea. It calmed down a bit later on and we went for lunch at a small taverna in a little village called Selia overlooking Plakias from the west. The taverna was in a sheltered position tucked into the hillside and we had a very nice meal enhanced by the wonderful view. Afterwards we returned to our apartment and spent the afternoon reading. A quiet day.
