We had quite an emotional day visiting the site of the Buchenwald concentration camp which is now a memorial. Buchenwald was built in 1937 outside the town of Weimar and between then and the end of the war over 250,000 people from over 50 countries were imprisoned there by the Nazis. 56,000 human beings met their deaths in Buchenwald and its subcamps. They were killed, starved to death, died of illness or died as victims of medical experiments.

Between 1945 and 1950 the Soviets used the area as a ‘Special Camp’ and mass graves from that time were subsequently found.
