Berlin - Bavaria - Paris - Bastogne - Christmas Markets -- our German vacation was so full of spectacular sites, that I just would not be able to fit it all in one blog! Therefore, I will write this in sections, with each major segment of our trip having it's own post. This is segment 4: War and Peace! We have been planning this vacation for years! Well, sort of. My friend and old co-worker, L... Read Full Entry

The Porta Nigra was built into the double church of St. Simeon in the 1030's, and this "college" was added as well. The church was demolished in the early 1800's but the college remains and can be toured.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the oldest Gothic church in Germany. It dates back to about 1235. We didn't go inside, but I wish I would have!

Dom St. Peter (or Trier Cathedral)

Yet another UNESCO World Heritage site (there are many in Trier!), the Cathedral is the oldest church in Germany! It took various building/demolitions/remodels to get to where it is today, so aging it is difficult. Parts of it date back to a church 4-times this size that Constantine had build in 326 AD, the same time he had Rome's St. Peter's Basilica. The rest of the church has been added on over the ages, with most of it being complete in the middle ages, The Holy Robe Chapel in the 1700's and the current alter in the 1970's.

This large center core area of the church are remains from the Romans, so date back the 300's AD!

I think I should do my bathroom ceiling like this! So gorgeous!

This cathedral houses a lot of relics from Christianity, but I'm not sure if I managed to take a photo of any of them.

I believe this is the Chapel of the Holy Robe. Or, well, behind those metal bars and beyond that wall.

Beautiful!
What an amazing trip and wonderful History lesson. I would be overjoyed to be walking thru there where so much history took place. I would probably still be pinching myself to see if it was real, so I can understand why the last entry of the blog took a while to write. The church was absolutely beautiful, as well as the Advent calendar building. That would be so cool to watch the performances there every night. Thanks for sharing your adventure! :)
