Remagen, Germany

July 15th

After finishing the North Sea coast across Holland, we started the Ems Canal that runs south from Weener. Shipping on the canal seemed minimal compared to the Rhine River. Our campsite in Lathen was on the canal and were able to see lots of recreational boating. After the lack of trees in Friesland, the canal was lined with them and it made for great cycling.

After the Ems Canal we jumped on a train back to Koln. The German train system is set up for taking your bike on board. Upon arrival in Koln, we wheeled our bikes into a elevator that took us to the ground level. It's so great!

We are headed south towards France. We will see friends in Strausbourg and maybe continue to Mulhouse. It's kind of a sentimental journey retracing some of our travels from our first trip in 1999. We continue to meet interesting folks along the way. I think it's why we like to travel by bike, as we seem to have more interaction with people. The German language is still difficult for us but, most Germans speak a little English. Our

French is slightly better and we are looking forward to the sound of it on our ears.
