Remagen, Germany July 15th After finishing the North Sea coast across Holland, we started the Ems Canal that runs south from Weener. Shipping on the canal seemed minimal compared to the Rhine River. Our campsite in Lathen was on the canal and were able to see lots of recreational boating. After the lack of trees in Friesland, the canal was lined with them and it made for great cycling. After the Ems Canal we jumped on a train back to Koln. The German train system is set up for taking your bike on board. Upon arrival in Koln, we wheeled our bikes into a elevator that took us to the ground level. It's so great! We are headed south towards France. Monday 6 July 2015 Our brief stop in Hannover was over very quickly. We needed a night's accommodation and Hannover drew the short straw. As we left the city we followed a tram line for some distance before heading west. The suburbs we drove through seemed attractive but time here was seemingly too brief. Another day perhaps. The first 30 kilometres drive was through farm land with grain the main crop. Last night's thunderstorm had flattened some of the fields. It was pleasant driving and if we did not have such a long drive today it would be the road to continue on. A cool change in the weather happened while we were asleep and in fact at one time in the early hours we were both awakened by the sound of a heavy shower of rain. This was certainly a turnaround of what we have experienced over the last couple of weeks as the temperatures during both day and night had built to yesterdays 38C. We were glad however for a change as yesterday had been too oppressive to be out in for too long and although the sun doesn’t make you wet like rain it can have the same effect making you want to stay in the shade rather than out exploring.
