The Lahn River. Wednesday 8 July 2015
Today is for meandering up one side of the River Rhine and down the other. We have made the brave decision to turn Polly off and find our own way using nothing but sheer Kiwi intelligence. There is a feeling of daring and anything could happen as we negotiate the roads leading to the east bank of the Rhine. A couple of attempts at connecting with the appropriate road and we were there close to the water, trying to snatch photo opportunities before they disappeared. Castles on hill tops, river views often with barges, sometimes two joined together, large river cruise boats, small river cruise boats, trains constantly running past, as well as car ferries taking the place of bridges, all these and more kept our cameras working hard as we made our way up The Rhine.
A sudden decision to purchase food for lunch had us swing into the carpark of an establishment named Globus. What, we wondered could be in that huge two storied building... surely a giant shopping mall. Giant it certainly was, shopping mall, no. This was the mother of all supermarkets, with eye popping quantities and variety of goods, and

Castle overlooking the town. a travelator to transport happy shoppers and their trolleys between floors. Faced with a bewildering choice of lunch food, there was really only one winner - apple and walnut pastries. We resolved to make up for our weakness by eating healthy food for the rest of the day.
Eventually we reached St Goarshausen and decided it was time to cross on the car ferry to the west bank of this busy river and begin to make our way back towards Koblenz. No sign of the Lorelie, although the ferry bore this name. Time for coffee and some healthy food, Oops, before we knew it there was apple strudel with all the trimmings on our table. So much for the good intentions. Healthy food tonight was our cry!
On down the river to the beautiful town of Boppard, definitely worth the stop we made. Remains of a Roman castle or fort surround part of the old town. We managed to find our way back out of town and in the process avoid running into tourist buses or getting too caught up in narrow one way streets. Entering Koblenz for a very important date with a hairdresser was fun. Just
St Goarshausen
Our ferry across the Rhine. which road to take to get over the bridge was the challenge. With Polly off limits today, it was a case of "If at first you don't succeed..." and of course we made it.
Haircut time was successful in the end. This establishment was one where you turn up and wait to be shorn. No problem except that others seemed to be coming in and being directed straight to a chair for the friseur treatment. An attempt to clarify whether one should grab an empty chair without waiting was met with a sharpish response and waiting resumed. In the end all was well, a good haircut and a smiling hairdresser and client, so international relations remained positive.
Dinner tonight was at our small country hotel. A leisurely affair with a bottle of wine and some healthy food. We can rest easy knowing that in the end we did keep our resolution.
